ALHS golf boys top Austin

The home-course advantage for the Albert Lea High School boys' golf team almost turned into a disadvantage.
The Tigers, according to coach Matt Addington, went for it a little too much at Green Lea Golf Course Monday, resulting in some higher-than-usual scores and a few balls out of bounds.
While the miscues didn't cost the Tigers in the end - they beat Austin 321-334 for nine holes - it left Addington a bit concerned.
"Coaching-wise, it's a little bit frustrating for our guys to sometimes get a little bit greedy at home and try to get birdie on every hole," said Addington. "We need to play a little more conservatively. I don't think we managed our own course very well."
The Tigers remained perfect in the Big Nine, though, running their record to 3-0.
Ben Jones led the way Monday, firing a 78 in less-than-ideal conditions. Following for the Tigers were Matt Bennett 80, Beau Larson 81, Jon Breuer 82, Mike Larson 85 and Ben Billat 90.
Addington praised the play of Breuer, who shot a 36 on the front nine but saw his back-nine total inflated by a couple bad holes.
"I have to really compliment Jon today," said Addington. "And Ben Jones put together his best round of the year."
The junior varsity won 345-407. Albert Lea scores: Casey Bowman 84, Alex Lair 85, Nate
Brackey 88, Drew Klick 88, Cory Amundson 92 and Troy French 93.
The Tigers play in the Northfield Invitational Thursday at 2 p.m.
