Baseball Tigers fall in five

Published Wednesday, April 30, 2003

OWATONNA - After a number of games in which they were within striking distance throughout, the Albert Lea High School baseball team was blown out for the second day in a row.

The Tigers lost 11-1 in five innings at Owatonna Tuesday, a day after falling 17-2 in five innings to Rochester JM.

"We can't give up those huge innings like we have the last two days," said coach Joe Sczublewski.

"Right now, somebody has to step up and shut it off."

The Huskies hit Tiger starter Derek Goodnature hard. The senior right-hander gave up 10 runs - eight earned - in two innings, allowing eight hits and four walks, with one strikeout.

Dave Heijerman pitched two innings in relief.

The Tigers scored their run in the fourth, when David Villarreal singled and Goodnature doubled.

The other Albert Lea hits were doubles by Nate Loberg and Josh Diaz.

The Tigers, 0-10 in the Big Nine and 0-11 overall, travel to face conference-leading Mankato West on Thursday.
