Weekend planner: Chase away the winter blues with concerts, sound and light show

Winter getting you down? Power 96 has the solution this weekend with its second annual "Beat the Blahs" Extravaganza. There will booths set up at Northbridge Mall and entertainment is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Following is a roundup of events happening in the area this weekend:
Friday, Feb. 27
€ "Beat the Blahs events include a program by Halverson School from 10-10:30 a.m., by Sibley from 1-1:30 p.m., and by Hawthorne from 1:30-2 p.m. The Albert Lea High School Jazz Band will entertain from 2-3 p.m. and L.D. Cruiser and the Tones will play from 5-7 p.m.
€ The Albert Lea Art Center features the work of Rockford, Iowa, artist Tracy Ingham. Gallery hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.
Saturday, Feb. 28
€ "Beat the Blahs events include a sound and light show by Center Stage Entertainment from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., demonstrations by the Bayside Ski Club from 11:30 a.m.-noon. a program by Cami's Dance Studio from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Raks Sharqi belly dancers from 2-3 p.m., a program by the Joyce Matthies Dance Centre from 3-3:30 p.m., and music by Second Take Band from 4-6 p.m.
€ The Albert Lea Art Center features the work of Rockford, Iowa, artist Tracy Ingham. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.
€ The Lein family - Kathie, Mina, Carol and Herbie - will present a program on stuffed animals at 1 p.m. at the Story Lady Doll & Toy Museum, 131 N. Broadway Ave. There will be stories, surprises and a craft. Admission is free for children and museum members and free for all others.
€ The Manchester Firemen and Auxiliary will hold a soup and pie supper from 5-7 p.m. at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Raffle tickets for toy tractors donated by Jensales Custom Toys will be available.
Sunday, Feb. 29
€ "Beat the Blahs events include spiritual music by George Marin, Tim Christianson and Todd Utpadel from noon-1 p.m., a live auction to benefit the United Way of Freeborn County from 1-2 p.m., a performance by the Albert Lea High School Show Choir from 2-3 p.m., and bluegrass and folk music by Geneva Witness and featuring Paul Goodnature from 3-4 p.m. A trip to Las Vegas from Carlson Wagonlit Travel and Power 96 will be given away at 4:30 p.m.
