Colonels end regular season with a win

AUSTIN - The opponent was not the Austin/Hayfield Athletics, as expected, or the Austin Greyhounds.
It was Austin's third team, and Albert Lea Colonels manager Bill Trygstad didn't know the nickname, and he didn't care. He was glad to get a game. And a win.
Albert Lea's amateur baseball team was victorious 8-4 at Austin Wednesday in what turned out to be the Colonels' final regular-season game. The Mankato Twins, who forfeited last Sunday's game with the Colonels, also had to forfeit this Sunday's contest.
In games played, the Colonels are 3-6 in the Southern Minny League and 4-15 overall. Counting forfeits, they're 6-6 and 7-15.
As usual, Wednesday's opponent was no slouch.
"They're a pretty good team," said Trygstad. "They're Class C, and they're still alive in their region playoffs. It was a nice win for the guys."
Trygstad was particularly encouraged by an offense that produced 12 hits by nine players.
"That was good to see," said Trygstad. "The guys started to hit like I thought they could hit."
Ryan Wangen led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Justin Kohn was 2-for-5. Contributing one hit apiece were Derek Goodnature, Zac Oquist, David Dahl, Mike Caballero, Mick Westeng, Matt Trygstad and Jay Link.
Isaac Walton was the winning pitcher, giving up three earned runs in eight innings. He struck out 10 and walked four. Craig Smith pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
"We made some nice defensive plays when we needed to, and Isaac got the strikeouts when he needed to," said Bill Trygstad. "We did have some errors, but we worked around most of those. Hopefully, this will give us a little jump for next Wednesday."
The Colonels start the league playoffs Wednesday, traveling to Owatonna or hosting Faribault. Win or lose, they'll play the following Sunday.
