Home, Red Cross benefit from Horswell's time

Since moving to Albert Lea eight years ago, Geraldine "Jerry" Horswell has had no trouble finding people who could use her help.
For her volunteer work, Horswell is being recognized as Freeborn County's Outstanding Senior Woman at the Freeborn County Fair Wednesday. A special program is planned for 1 p.m. She will also be recognized during the Minnesota State Fair.
"I kind of transferred my involvement," Horswell said of the work she's chosen to do.
Horswell and her husband Gene are originally from the Thompson, Iowa, area. Most recently, Gene was a vegetable farmer in Wisconsin for over 20 years. She did the bookkeeping. They moved here to be closer to their daughter.
Both Gene and Jerry have been active with the Freeborn County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She volunteers in the office and is the financial secretary of the board. "It was Gene's idea when we got here to get involved with the Red Cross," she said. "It's a good organization. They're busy."
Once she heard the Good Samaritan Center needed volunteers, she's been going there ever since. "Four mornings a week, I deliver mail," she said, adding she accompanies shopping trips as well.
"They have to have a lot of volunteers," Horswell said. 'It's a nice place with nice people."
She occasionally volunteers at the Albert Lea Medical Center and was a "Mover" when the new clinic facility opened and people needed help finding where they were to go.
"Now I call and see if they need help," she said.
Jerry also was a reading volunteer for a year.
The couple enjoys traveling to visit their children. In addition to the daughter who lives here, they have two sons, one in California and one in Baton Rouge, La., and two daughters, one in Illinois and one in Indianapolis. They also have five grandchildren.
Jerry also enjoys crocheting, cooking and doing crossword puzzles.
The Horswells are members of the Church of God in Mason City.
Jerry said she was "dumbfounded" by the award.
