Rebels sweep sub-section track meet

Published Saturday, May 29, 2004

MAPLETON - The United South Central/Alden-Conger track and field teams had another great day.

This time, it was in the sub-section Meet at Mapleton, where both brought home the championship trophy Thursday with a winning margin of more than 30 points.

For the boys, it was their 12 sub-section title in 13 years.

The Rebels were led by six first-place finishes, including 1-2 showings in the throwing events.

Isaac Severson, Brad Musser, and Randy Kauffmann went 1-2-5 in the shot put, and Jacob Wittmann, Kauffmann and Musser went 1-2-6 in the discus.

"We're really pleased with the performance of our weight men," said coach Kent Viesselman. "They've been working hard all season, and it finally came together for them. Our field event people all performed very well. In fact, every one of our entries in the field events ended up placing."

Other firsts were by Bob Schmitz in the 400 meters, Brad Tomschin in the 800, Jon Voigt in the pole vault and Eric Youngblom in the 3200.

Also advancing to section: Matt Mueller, fourth, 1600; 4x100 relay, second (Schmitz, Jake Stenzel, Voigt, Tomschin); 4x200 relay, second (Eric Melby, Alex Bute, Alex Ramaker, Jordan Stenzel); 4x800 relay, second (Ramaker, Melby, Youngblom, Jake Stenzel); Youngblom, second, high jump; Bute, fourth, high jump; Spencer Niebuhr, second, pole vault; Brian Wood, third, pole vault; Schmitz, third, long jump; Tomschin, third, triple jump; Voigt, third, 100; and Melby, fourth, 200.

"Another real bright spot was the performance of some of our freshmen," said Viesselman. "I'm very pleased with how they've come along this year."

The girls' team continued to be impressive.

Rebecca Leland and running mate Megan Jensen went 1-2 in the 800, Amy Christenson won both hurdles, Jamie Klein dominated the 3200, and Becca Bryson continued her assault on meet records in the triple jump to account for the five Rebel first-place finishes.

"In four of the individual events we didn't win, the girls went 2-3," said Viesselman. "I'm really pleased with the team performances we've gotten the last few weeks."

Other section qualifiers: Jenny Schultz, fourth, discus; Aleshia Satre, second, 100; Ashlie Satre, third, 100; Lindsey Rauenhorst, third, 200 and third, high jump; Mandi Kruger, second, 400; Holly Theede, third, 400; Katie Schultz, second, 1600 and fourth, high jump; Christensen, second, high jump; Amelia Treptow, second, pole vault; Kara Behr, third, pole vault; Bryson, third, long jump; Kallie Rollenhagen, third, triple jump; Kim Staloch, fourth, triple jump; 4x200 relay, second (Christensen, Ashlie Satre, Rauenhorst, Aleshia Satre); 4x400 relay, second (Jensen, Leland, Rollenhagen, Theede);
