Wolverines bounce back with a win

MABEL - After a rough weekend, the Glenville-Emmons baseball team returned to its winning ways with a 6-4 Southeast Conference victory at Mabel-Canton Tuesday.
The Wolverines, 4-0 in the SEC and 9-2 overall, suffered their first losses of the season in Saturday's Panther Invitational at New Richland.
They wasted little time getting started at Mabel, taking a 2-0 lead after three innings, but the home team tied it and sent it to extra innings with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh on two errors, a stolen base and a one-out suicide squeeze bunt.
At that point, according to coach Louie Toulouse, the Wolverines decided they weren't going home without a win.
"When they came back and tied it, we were bound and determined to come back and win that game," said Toulouse. "To go out and score three runs in the top of the eighth showed a lot of character by our team."
In the eighth, Devin Kaasa singled, Michael Greibrok walked and both scored on a throwing error on an infield hit by Alex Hansen. Nathan Cooper followed with a run-scoring double.
Kaasa, Cooper and Hansen were all 2-for-3 for the day. Cooper drove in two runs. Kaasa tripled, Hansen doubled. Greibrok, Garrett Davis and Wade Flattum added one hit apiece.
Hansen was the winning pitcher, striking out 13 and walking four while giving up six hits. Three of the four runs off him were earned.
"Alex pitched a real good game on kind of a wet, dreary day," said Toulouse. "He kept us in the ballgame."
The Wolverines face Byron in a nonconference game Thursday at 4:30 at Glenville.
