MANKATO - The United South Central/Alden-Conger track and field teams opened the season in strong fashion Monday, with the girls winning and the boys taking second in the Gopher
Conference Indoor Meet at Minnesota State-Mankato.
The girls won with 133 points, followed by WEM with 101, NRHEG 91, Mankato Loyola, 85, JWP 61, Medford 42 and Blooming Prairie 14.
The girls, according to coach Kent Viesselman, showed they can win even when things don't go as planned. After opting not to enter the 4x800-meter relay, the Rebels' top hurdler jumped the gun and then their sprint medley relay team was disqualified.
"We got started in a pretty deep hole," said Viesselman.
The comeback started with the 1600, where Jamie Klein and Marah Robinson finished 1-2.
The other firsts for the Rebels were by Amelia Treptow, pole vault; Megan Jensen, 400; Ciara Christensen, 55 low hurdles; Becca Bryson, triple jump; and the 4x400 relay team of Becca Bryson, Jensen, Christenson and Rebecca Leland.
Other places: Kallie Rollenhagen, second, triple jump, fifth, long jump and fourth, 55 low hurdles; Jensen, sixth, shot put; Kim Staloch, fifth, triple jump and third, 55 high hurdles; Bryson, third, long jump and third, 55 dash; Leland, second, 800; Robinson, sixth, 800; Andrea Bias, fifth, 200; Amber Erickson, third, 3200; 4x200 relay, third, (Rollenhagen, Lindsey Rauenhorst, Bias, Leland).
The USC/AC boys had 90 points, second to first-place NRHEG's 107.
The Rebels had three firsts, by Amos Bessler in the high jump, Brad Tomschin in the 800 and the sprint medley relay team of Alex Ramaker, Tomschin, Bessler and Bryan Hauge.
Other places: Brad Musser, fourth, shot put; Jesse Courrier, sixth, shot put; Jordan Stenzel, sixth, long jump and sixth, 55 dash; Spencer Niebuhr, second, pole vault and fourth, 55 intermediate hurdles; Jermias Gonsalez, fifth, pole vault; 4x800 relay, fifth (Erik Melby, Gonsalez, Paul Little, Shane Bias); Matt Mueller, third, 1600; 4x200 relay, fourth (Melby, Bessler, Jonathan Leland, Alex Bute); Daniel Sandt, sixth, 400; Alex Ramaker, fourth, 800; Eric Youngblom, second, 3200; 4x400 relay, second (Ramaker, Bute, Bessler, Tomschin).
"Because of our youth in the boys team, we lack a little first-place-punch," said Viesselman.
"That will come as the kids mature and get stronger. For now, we're sorting things out, and trying to improve every time out.
The Rebels return to action Thursday, April 7 with the Rebel Relays.
