Tomschin to run at state, USC/AC team season comes to an end

Published Monday, October 31, 2005

BLUE EARTH - The USC/AC boys' and girls' cross country teams each completed their seasons with a third place finish at the section meet Thursday at Riverside Country Club, North of Blue Earth.

Fairmont won the girls' competition, with Blue Earth Area finishing second. In the boys' competition, Blue Earth Area finished first with Fairmont nosing out the Rebels for the second spot by a scant three points.

The top two teams advanced to the state meet. Brad Tomschin of the Rebels finished third to advance to the state meet as an individual.

Tomschin, who has really come on during the latter part of the season, continued to lop seconds off his time as he out kicked three other runners to finish third.

“Brad has looked very strong and has competed very well the last few meets,” said USC head coach Kent Viesselman. “He appears to be rounding into top form at the right time.”

Jamie Klein (13th), Becca Bryson (14th), and Amber Erickson (19th) all finished in the top 20 to lead the Rebels. Katie Schultz (49th) and Joelle Elmer (55th) were the next two Rebels, with Nicole Klein (65th) and Shelby Little (69th) rounding out the lineup for the USC/AC team.

“We're very pleased with the girls' performance,” said Viesselman. "They finished the season on a high note, with excellent performances by everyone, considering the circumstances. Jamie and Joelle haven't been able to do much for a couple of weeks due to injury/illness, but were able to rise to the occasion with solid performances. In view of that, I feel we performed very well as a team.”

Following Tomschin were Bryan Hauge (16th), Greg Opseth (20th), Eric Youngblom (24th), Jacob Elmer (25th), Shane Bias (28th), and Alex Ramaker (45th).

"This was our boys' best team performance of the year,” said Viesselman.

“Nobody gave us much of a chance, but the kids just about pulled it off. I'm very pleased with the performance against strong competition.

Along with Tomschin, Klein, Bryson, Schultz, Meghan Chirpich, Carissa Keith, Youngblom, Opseth, Jacob Escherich, and Erik Melby will be graduating in June.

“This is a fine group of young people," said Viesselman. "With their graduation, we lose a great deal of positive leadership and a great deal of experience from our program. They will be missed next year.”
