The Albert Lea volleyball team got its 2006 season started on a positive note Tuesday night, beating the Southland Rebels 26-24, 25-23, and 25-19.

Tuesday night’s match was the first at Albert Lea for new head coach Melissa Wasmoen who grew up and went to school in Alden.

“It was a nice way to get the season started,” said Wasmoen. “The girls played hard and found out that even if they get behind they can come back and win.”

The Rebels started game one on fire and seemed to have the Tigers confused, going ahead 5-0 before AL got on the board. But after trailing 9-3, the Tigers got their game going and finally tied the score at 13-13.

Both teams battled for the lead with neither able to go ahead by more than three points the rest of the game. With the score tied 24-24, AL was able to close out the game with two consecutive points to take game one 26-24.

Game two was a lot like the first with the Tigers taking the early lead at 14-7. Southland battled back to even the score at 16-16 and went ahead 19-21 before Annika Smed served an ace to pull the Tigers to within one at 21-20. Smed led the Tigers with eight kills on the night.

AL would not trail again in game two, winning 25-23 on an ace by Missy Webb, one of three she had for the match.

“That’s one thing as a team we have to get better at,” said Wasmoen. “We need to work on our serving the next couple days of practice. But this is a nice way to get started.”

Southland wouldn’t go down without a fight and gave the Tigers everything they could handle in game three as they were down only 21-19 before falling 25-19.

Kat Ladwig led the Tigers with 15 assists and also added three kills. Ali Demmer was strong at the net, collecting six blocks on the night.

AL starts the year at 1-0 after only winning three matches all of last year with two of those were against Big Nine rival Austin.

Albert Lea will be back in action again Thursday when they host Faribault at 7:30 p.m.
