Blossoms down G-E

GLENVILLE — With one team coming in with a 7-1 record and the other a 2-7 mark, it would seem that this one wouldn’t be much of a game. But after a 10-day break over Christmas the Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team looked fresh and aggressive on defense, confusing Blooming Prairie and hanging close in the early going before their 23 turnovers spelled defeat at the hands of the Blossoms 68-41.

“We looked really good in the first seven or eight minutes,” said Wolverines head coach Lisa Ziebell. “Our girls played hard, that’s all I can ask for. We need to figure out a rotation that works, once we do that will hopefully help.”

The Wolverines played relentless defense in the first 11 minutes of the game forcing 12 BP turnovers and led 9-7 with nine minutes left before the half. G-E had to depend on its free throw shooting to keep the game close as they only converted three field goals in the first half but made 9 of 16 at the charity stripe.

Ashley Lau and Jordan Van Ryswyk led the Wolverines with 12 points apiece but couldn’t get their games to click at the same time. Van Ryswyk was in foul trouble early in the first half and wasn’t really a factor, going the entire 18 minutes without taking a shot from the field.

But at the start of the second half Van Ryswyk came out on fire, hitting her first three shots and putting G-E’s first six points of the second half on the board.

While the Wolverines offense looked a little better in the second half, the defense just couldn’t stop the Blossoms Kari Peterson who slashed her way to the basket numerous times and led all scorers with 19 points on the night.

In the end the Blooming Prairie bench was to deep for the Wolverines to overcome and the Blossoms steadily increased their lead down the stretch and coasted to the 27 point win.

The loss drops the Wolverines to 2-8 on the year as they prepare to face Hope Lutheran in a girls and boys varsity only match-up Jan. 2.
