Fountain Lake fountains fixed

Published Wednesday, May 31, 2006

The fountains of Fountain Lake are running again, after two engineers from Albert Lea's City Engineering Department repaired a leaky cable Tuesday morning.

“They're high-maintenance pieces of equipment,” said Scott Woitas of the city Engineering Department. “Hopefully we got it fixed; we won't know for a few days. We'll just keep an eye on them.”

One fountain malfunctioned between Friday night and early Saturday afternoon, developing a leaky cable.

Matt Tubbs piloted a city pontoon out to the fountains and maneuvered the craft, allowing Woitas to lie flat on the pontoon and reach the fountain. The repairs took several hours.

Each of the three fountains is separate from the others, and all three are hooked up with separate wires and cables, so when one fountain leaks or malfunctions, the others continue operating.

The fountains run on timers, shutting off around midnight and coming on around 7 a.m., with the fountains' lights turning on around 8 p.m. each night.
