Back in the win column
Published Wednesday, January 31, 2007
FARIBAULT — The Albert Lea Lea boys’ basketball team put an end to its 14-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 66-65 win over Faribault.
It was the second win of the season for the Tigers and the second time they have beaten the Falcons after opening the season with a 47-45 victory in Albert Lea.
Corey Dieser hit two consecutive 3-pointers to turn a four-point deficit into a two point Tiger lead late in the game. Dieser also hit a pair of free throws and Jared Gavle came up with a big turnover to seal the win for the Tigers.
“It was great to finally get the win,” Albert Lea assistant coach Kyle Peterson said. “It wasn’t as big of a margin as we would like but we will take it.”
A.J. Kortz led the Tigers with 19 points, Dieser had 17 and R.J. Polley added 10.
Kortz and Dieser led the Tigers from the backcourt, but the play of Polley and Jared Matson in the frontcourt was just as big.
“Jared played the best game of his career and got nine points and R.J. stepped up,” Peterson said.
The Falcons are now 2-15 overall.
The Tigers (2-14) will look to put together a winning streak but it won’t be easy Friday when they host third-ranked Owatonna.
