Albert Lea boys tennis scores second win

Published Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team won its second match of the season 4-3 Tuesday against Faribault, something that hasn’t come easy for the Tigers in the Big Nine conference.

“We definitely appreciate any win in the Big Nine,” head coach Sean Gillam said. “It’s always great to get a win any way you can.”

Gillam has to appreciate the manner in which Albert Lea won its match Tuesday, because the win included two of the three doubles teams earning a victory.

The No. 1 doubles team of senior Evan Nolander and sophomore Kyle See-Rockers grabbed a crucial 6-1, 6-2 win and the No. 2 doubles team of junior Kevin Zogg and senior Eric Volman came through with a 6-1, 6-2 win as well.

The No. 3 doubles team of freshman Logan Tufte and sophomore Luke Thompson nearly made it a sweep in the doubles department, taking the first set 7-6 (7-0) before falling 5-7, 3-6 in the next two.

Senior Drew Passingham and junior Joe Polis gave the Tigers solid singles wins as Passingham turned in a solid 6-1, 6-1 performance and Polis went 6-2, 6-3 for his win.

“It’s nice to see an established player like Drew playing well,” Gillam said. “He’s playing smart tennis and you can’t beat smart tennis.”

After tinkering with the doubles lineup Gillam found the right combination Tuesday as he liked what he saw.

“The doubles were more dominant,” he said. “I liked the way they were doing things.”
