50 years ago - 1958
The Austin Packers defeated the Albert Lea Packers 10-9 in a Southern Minnesota League baseball game. John Catello led Albert Lea with a home run and four RBIs. The game held in Albert Lea drew 1,100 fans who were admitted for free.
In its second game of the week Albert Lea defeated Mason City 4-0. Myron Hoffman pitched the shutout and threw a two-hitter.
25 years ago - 1983
The Alden American Legion baseball team defeated the Albert Lea Blue team 8-4. Tim Michals and Steve Sanderson had two hits each for Alden. Kevin Woitas hit a two-run home run for Albert Lea.
The County team defeated the City team 11-8 in the annual Freeborn County Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame Old-Timers game. Jim Beach had four hits and John Rasmussen scored three runs for the County team. Larry Petersen hit two home runs for the City.
The Minnesota Twins hit five home runs in their 17-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Tom Brunansky hit two home runs, Kent Hrbek, Gary Ward and Ron Washington one each for the Twins.
10 years ago - 1998
Flight winners in the 1998 Green Lea Golf Course Club Tournament included: Championship Flight - Chris Baas; First Flight - Brad Williamson; Second Flight - Larry Sorenson; Third Flight - Jack Werner; Fourth Flight - Darrel Soper; Fifth Flight - Craig Bowman; Sixth Flight - Craig Kreil; Seventh Flight - Mike Strothman.
Winning pitcher Rich Yost pitched a complete game for the Albert Lea Colonels in their 14-5 win over Faribault. Mac Noland had four hits in five at-bats, five RBIs and two home runs and Brad Carlson was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and also homered.
The Albert Lea Elks U-17 boys soccer team defeated Burnsville 2-1. Grant Neitzell and Matt Humphrey scored the goals for Albert Lea. In their second game they were defeated by Dakota Rev 4-2. Albert Lea goals were scored by Max Beers and Neitzell.
