You Can Help

Published Saturday, August 2, 2008

The following are some of the volunteer opportunities currently open in Freeborn County. If you can help with any of them or would like to volunteer for other things, call Beth Spande, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program director, at Senior Resources, 377-7433.

Reading Partners: School resumes in a few weeks and children will again need adults to help them develop reading skills. Give an hour or two a week to help one child gain skill and confidence as a reader. Training is provided so you don’t need more than a love of reading and a concern for children.

The Arc of Freeborn County: Help serve and clean up after the annual hamburger supper on Aug. 13 at the Albert Lea American Legion. We need people to dish up food, set and clear tables, and serve coffee and water. Shifts are from 4:30 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Freeborn County Environmental Services: Helpers are needed in Albert Lea from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 16. A variety of jobs are available for volunteers at hazardous waste collection sites: open paint cans, direct traffic, record names, help unload vehicles. There is something for every skill and ability. If you can’t volunteer, at least be sure to bring any hazardous waste to the transfer station on Richway Drive. Don’t put it in the garbage!

RSVP, a program of Senior Resources of Freeborn County, receives some funding through the United Way of Freeborn County, the Minnesota Board on Aging, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.Reading Partners: School resumes in a few weeks and children will again need adults to help them develop reading skills.
