Albert Lea consumers need to shop locally

Published Wednesday, August 6, 2008

I have always been in favor of local shopping and in giving our own Albert Lea businesses and stores in our community my business. If we want to have a good selection of stores to do business with locally we need to support them. With the closing of Bath & Body Works coming soon, Starbucks and Cato store it makes me wonder what will go next. We need to all strengthen and support our own community before other businesses, like the ones above, are affected as well. Our stores here in Albert Lea have always had what I’ve been looking for when purchasing things. For being a smaller town our local stores do a good job of carrying a good selection of things to choose from. If we don’t support them we shouldn’t be surprised or have a right to feel bad if they close.

The way the economy is right now it makes sense to save on gas, save on postage, shop locally and keep our own community businesses strong.

I have always tried to shop locally, basically because I don't like to shop. Be realistic though, if you compare prices and need something from an office store, Good Luck! You can't find it in Albert Lea. Anyone that is on a fixed income needs to find the bargains, sorry, but some of the stores like to stick it to the consumer. I feel bad when a store closes, but who wants to pay $4.00 for a cup of coffee! Not ME!

i get the supporting the local businesses i work for one myself. but being a lower income family i get the having to go to bargains too. times are tough for everyone and stores have to raise prices to stay in the game which makes it even harder for consumers to keep up. i just see no end to it until we find some turn around point.
