Nesse on dean’s list

Bridget Nesse, daughter of Wendell and Patti Nesse of Albert Lea, was named to the spring semester 2008 dean’s list at the Minnesota School of Business Globe College in Shakopee.

To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Nesse is a 2006 graduate of Albert Lea High School. She plans to become a veterinary technician specializing in animal dentistry.

Hubbard receives scholarship

Carrie Hubbard, a graduate of Albert Lea High School, has received a $400 upperclass scholarship from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She is the daughter of Mary Hubbard and Edward Hubbard.

The upperclass scholarship is available to students pursuing their first undergraduate degree who have completed at least 12 MSUM semester credits by the end of the fall semester with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better.

Adam Elseth earns degree

Adam Thomas Elseth, son of Jeff and Denise Elseth of Albert Lea, has earned a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management with “high distinction” - the highest attainable academic honor given to the top 5 percent of the Carlson graduating class.

Elseth double-majored in finance and risk management and insurance. He is a 2004 graduate of Albert Lea High School.

Lynne receives scholarship

Eric Lynne of New Richland was awarded the Donohue & Associates Scholarship in Civil and Environmental Engineering for the 2008-09 school year at South Dakota State University.

Lynne is a graduate student majoring in civil engineering at SDSU, where he is working toward his master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering and is the president of the American Water Works Association/ Water Environment Federation (student chapter). He is the son of Paul and Linda Lynne and is a 2003 graduate of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School.

Donohue & Associates Scholarship is a water and wastewater consulting firm headquartered in Sheboygan, Wis.

Derek Heideman awarded scholarship

Derek Heideman of Albert Lea was awarded a Leaders for Tomorrow Scholarship for the 2008-09 school year at South Dakota State University, Brookings.

Heideman is an incoming freshman general agriculture major at SDSU this fall. He is the son of Randy and Nancy Heideman of Albert Lea and a graduate of Albert Lea High School, where he was active in FFA and 4-H.

Leaders for Tomorrow Scholarships, administered through the SDSU Foundation, are provided through gifts from SDSU alumni and friends. They recognize high academic achievement among high school students and are based on a combination of high school class rank and college entrance test scores.

Farry on dean’s list

Troy Farry, son of Tim and Julie Farry of Winona, was named to the spring 2008 academic dean’s list at Winona State University. To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Farry is a student in the engineering department.

He is the grandson of Katherine Farry of Albert Lea.

Area students on dean’s list at Bemidji State

Brandon John Overland and Emily Rebecca Wirkus, both of Albert Lea, were named to the spring 2008 dean’s list at Bemidji State University.

To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.25 or better.

Area students graduate from SDSU

Blaire Frances Dressen and Tyler John Freeman, both of Albert Lea, were among those graduating from South Dakota State University at Brookings during spring commencement ceremonies.

Dressen was awarded a bachelor of science degree in agricultural and biological sciences.

Freeman was awarded a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Local students receive scholarships from MSU

The following Albert Lea students received scholarship awards from the College of Science, Engineering and Technology for the 2008-09 academic school year at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

- Seth Brua, $1,500 Federated Insurance Scholarship. He is the son of Anna Hernandez.

- Connie Nesset, $5,000 Mentored Academic Experience Scholarship.

- Mark Roberts, $5,000 Mentored Academic Experience Scholarship. He is the son of Mildred Roberts.

Smith earns 4.0 GPA

Brandon Smith earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the 2008 spring semester at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus.

Smith is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and is studying for his master’s degree in epidemiology.

He is the son of Faye and Brent Smith of Albert Lea and a 2002 graduate of Albert Lea High School.

Thompson earns master’s

Michelle Thompson of Owatonna, formerly of Albert Lea, was awarded her master’s degree in social work May 15 from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Thompson passed her licensed graduate social work exam in June. She is employed at Cedar House Inc. in Northfield.

She is the daughter of Marvin and Judy Gulbrandson of Albert Lea.

David Everhard awarded scholarship

David Everhard of Albert Lea has accepted a scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2008-09 academic year.

Everhard, a freshman majoring in computer information systems, will receive a $1,024 Ray Breen Scholarship.

Shannon Wergin graduates

Shannon Wergin of New Richland graduated from Bemidji State University with a bachelor of science degree, with honors, in elementary teacher education at the conclusion of the 2008 spring semester.

RCTC announces spring semester graduates

Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) announced its spring semester 2008 graduates.

Albert Lea area graduates included: Wyn Mitchell Alexander; Kristi Joy Hjermstad; Judson Allen Kromminga; Scott A. Tuchtenhagen; and Andrew D. Witt;

Local students graduate from UW-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison held spring commencement ceremonies, May 17-18.

The following Albert Lea area students were awarded degrees: Caitlin Meredith Dooley, bachelor of arts in communication arts; Ross David Stadheim, bachelor of arts in history/political science.

Area students on UI dean’s list

Several area students were among those University of Iowa students named to the dean’s list for the 2008 spring semester.

To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Students are listed by their names, hometowns and colleges.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s 2008 spring semester dean’s list includes the following area students.

From Albert Lea: Peter Bracker, nursing, nursing and health sciences.

From Twin Lakes: Katie Brackey, management, business.
