Vietnam veterans to honor all veterans with free barbecue picnic on Saturday

Published Monday, August 11, 2008

“Thank you” and “welcome home.” Simple words that mean so much to servicemen of all eras, to be shown respect and to be appreciated for their sacrifices in the line of duty, for serving their country, no matter when they served, no matter where. Age makes no difference in this common bond.

Chapter 790 President Jerry Parmley of the Vietnam Veterans of America is inviting all veterans, services and eras to a free veterans barbecue picnic on Aug. 16 in Lake Mills to honor servicemen from around the region. He has seen this event grow larger every year as word of this veterans event has spread among servicemen over the past five years. “Bringing soldiers together is what this event is all about,” said Parmley.

Sponsoring the picnic is Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 790, comprised of veterans from all branches of service living in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota who served their country during the Vietnam Era. Members will host this 5th Annual “All Veterans Picnic” at Oakwood Park in Lake Mills from 1 to 3 p.m. Grilling up the burgers, brats and hot dogs, shucking fresh sweet corn, dishing up the potato salad and of course, serving lots of ice cold lemonade.

“We can always make room for a variety of side dishes, salads, or desserts folks bring to share ... especially the desserts.

“We have lined up great entertainment again this year treating veterans to a program featuring local singers and door prizes.” Parmley added. He also mentioned the overall theme of patriotism among the veterans. All family members are encouraged to attend too.

“Spread the word about the barbecue picnic among your veteran buddies. Help put a smile on a home-bound veteran by giving him a ride to the picnic and shake the hand of every veterans you meet to day and tell them how much you appreciate sacrifices they made to protect our country,” he added.
