Here are local and area highlights in history for Aug. 12, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1993 — A Tribune article said Sophie Ehrhardt of Albert Lea planned to start a Montessori preschool in the city.

1983 — The previous day was observed as Lea Foods Day in Albert Lea. One of the highlights of this occasion was a tour of the newly-expanded plant on 13th Street.

1943 — Recruiters from the U.S. Merchant Marine were in the Albert Lea area to obtain crewmen for the nation’s fleet of ships involved in World War II activities.
