50 years ago - 1958

In the first round of the Church League National Division playoffs Grace Lutheran defeated St. Theodore 10-0. John Thorson threw a three-hitter for Grace.

Ellendale defeated St. Clair 5-2 in the Four County League baseball playoffs. Snuffy Jensen homered and Al Berg hit a triple for Ellendale. Ed Jensen was the winning pitcher.

Catcher Paul Ehrhard hit a game winning home run in the eighth inning for the Albert Lea Packers in their 4-3 win over Fairmont in a Southern Minnesota League game.

In their second game of the week Charlie Weathers, Paul Flores and Bill Ankoviak homered for the Albert Lea Packers in their 10-3 win over the Austin Packers.

25 years ago - 1983

The Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-3. Al Williams was the winning pitcher and Tim Laudner homered for the Twins.

10 years ago - 1998

Randy Moss scored on a 44-yard pass reception for the Minnesota Vikings in their 28-0 win over the New England Patriots in their opening preseason football game.

Women’s Championship Flight — Virginia Hanson; First Flight — Gerry Vogt; Second Flight — Paula Bennett; Third Flight — Betty Helgerson.

Winners of the annual Ladies Guest Day at Green Lea Golf Course: Champioship Flight — Virginia Hanson of Albert Lea; First Flight — Jean Luce of Burnsville; Second Flight — Shari Hanson of New Richland; Third Flight — Joanne Gold of Albert Lea and Jean Baumann of Austin; Fourth Flight — Sandy Haried of Emmons; Fifth Flight — Peg Hamilton of Adams; Sixth Flight — Carol Hamilton of Adams; Seventh Flight — Ida Mildenstein.

I can still see the hanging curve ball. Ken Staples a friend who was the Fairmont catcher, was giving me static from behind the plate when the Fairmont pitcher, righthander Loyal Bloxum let go of the pitch. His next utterance was "oh expletive" and I hit it over the left field wall into Renee Wambach's back yard.

I've got to agree with nostreves -- shorter intervals between "Sports Memories" news would be greatly appreciated. I realize it might be a little more work (initially), but I think your readership for this section would increase. Thanks for considering.
