50 years ago - 1957

- Named to the Gopher League All-Star Football team were the following: Jim Weller, jr., tackle, Jerry Hemingway, jr., guard, Carlyle Hagen, sr., back and Warren Torgerson, sr., back from Ellendale and Luther Lehman, sr., back from New Richland.

- The Alden football team defeated Elmore 77-0 to record its eighth straight victory. Elmore had to play with only 15 players because of a flu outbreak in Elmore.

- In a Big Nine Conference football game the Mankato Scarlets defeated Albert Lea 20-7. Roger Villarreal scored the Tigers’ touchdown on a 5-yard run.

25 years ago - 1982

- Chris Hall of the Albert Lea High School cross country won the individual title in Region 1AA and advanced to the Minnesota state tournament.

- The Winona Winhawks defeated the Albert Lea Tigers 33-0 in the season’s final football game. The Tigers finished with a 2-6 record in the Big Nine Conference and 2-7 overall.

- The ALHS volleyball team tied Rochester John Marshall for the Big Nine Conference title. It was the fifth straight year that the Tigers tied for or won the Big Nine Conference title. Team members included Nancy Bellrichard, Tami Johnson, Trisha Reichl, Cindy Nielson, SuEllen Folven, Brenda Johnson, Janis Wangen, Robbi VanderWaal and Diane Curry.

10 years ago - 1997

- Freshman Eric Beck placed third in Section 1AA and advanced to the state tournament. He was the first boy to qualify for the state tournament since Chris Hall in 1982. Sophomore Melissa Roche qualified for her third straight state cross country meet by finishing seventh in Section Section 1AA.

- The United South Central boys’ cross country team won the Section 2A title for the fourth straight year. Team members included Kelly Hinkley, Tim Staloch, Brad Steverman, Cam Evjen, Josh Schoen, Charlie Lehman and Aaron Peterson. The USC girls won the Section 2A title. Team members included Sarah Linder, Kim Gamradt, Denise Sonnek, Lyssa Tibodeau, Alicia Willette, Steph Linder, Amber Sonnek and Cheryl Steverman.

I can still see the hanging curve ball. Ken Staples a friend who was the Fairmont catcher, was giving me static from behind the plate when the Fairmont pitcher, righthander Loyal Bloxum let go of the pitch. His next utterance was "oh expletive" and I hit it over the left field wall into Renee Wambach's back yard.

I've got to agree with nostreves -- shorter intervals between "Sports Memories" news would be greatly appreciated. I realize it might be a little more work (initially), but I think your readership for this section would increase. Thanks for considering.
