Who gets aid for college from the government?
Published Monday, August 18, 2008
The illegal immigrant situation we have in our country is not a racist issue, it is a pocketbook issue! When are the American people going to realize this and finally get sick and tired of financially assisting them in their health care, education and anything else that they aren’t paying for. I have heard that they can come into our country, (illegally), and can get financial help to attend our colleges. I couldn’t hardly believe that until it is now affecting me, personally. My daughter who has my four grandchildren, is a single parent who is working two jobs, her main one being a server at a fine dining restaurant in downtown Minneapolis where the majority of her income is tip money. Her oldest daughter graduated from high school in June and has enrolled in cosmetology school her first day being today. She was turned down for a student loan because of my daughter’s credit, and her type of work. The father is in no position to assist her.
In desperation, my daughter called me to ask if I would co-sign a loan, so my granddaughter can have a career in cosmetology, which I will do if she can’t get any financial help. What was really frustrating about this issue, my daughter told me about a young woman, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who has been bussing tables at the restaurant, recently quit her job because she got financial help from our government to attend college! There is something wrong with this picture!
I know that I am sick and tired of just talking about this problem (and it is a serious one) so I have contacted my congressman’s office to express my concerns regarding this. I would hope others who are concerned about this issue would do the same. I sincerely hope that the rock-throwing incident at the Third of July Parade isn’t the general feeling of the legal residents here. I support the Minnesota Coalition on Immigration Reduction for what they are trying to do to help solve these issues.
At this moment, I am hearing on the radio that there is going to be (another) increase in our health insurance. I wonder why?
When are you going to get sick and tired of being sick and tired?

Sharon, this is what happens when America falls asleep at the wheel. In California, children of immigrants are getting free full rides to Stanford, UC Davis, Cal Poly, and others with only a 3.0 GPA; I am paying for both my son and daughter, both 4.0 GPA's, to go to a State University. No grants, no scholarships. If you want to see your future, look to the west; I've been telling relatives in Albert Lea for years, and now they are experiencing the same dilemma. We saw it coming, we just didn't want to do anything about it. Sick & tired in CA---

It doesn't sound like you have all the facts.
It does sound like someone is looking for someone to blame because life isn't fair. Life not being fair is a fact of life no matter what color you are.
First of all, the children of illegal immigrants may be attending public schools free of charge (something that is good because education is the first step in ending the cycle of poverty and illegal immigration), but illegal immigrants can not get federal assistance to attend a reputable college. Immigrants can to college and use american funds on a student visa, and you can thank both conservatives and liberals for that!
Also, a student who attends an accredited college who does not have a criminal record and who does not have a history of defaulting on student loans should be able to get a student loan. I have known a considerable number of people who were able to get student loans and afford even expensive private colleges because the financial aid office did their job.
I recommend getting all the facts instead of hearing things 3rd hand before you go on your next witch hunt.

You are right, many of us are living as working poor. I don't see how you can blame liberals for that though. Economically speaking the state of the economy is drastically higher when liberals take control. Clinton vs. Bush is a prime example. By the end of the Clinton years we had a huge surplus, Now we are at the end of the Bush years and we have a huge deficit.
Also, I want to remind you of all that Clinton, a liberal, did to make going to college attainable for people like your grandaughter.
