50 years ago - 1958
Kiester eliminated Alden 7-6 in the V-8 League amateur baseball playoff finals and advanced to Region 5B play. George Whipple threw a six-hitter for the victory. Ellendale defeated St. Clair 4-2 to claim the Four County playoff title. Ralph Dahl hit a game-winning home run for Ellendale in the eigth inning. In the first round of Region 5B play Kiester defeated Ellendale 8-1. Ron Cravan hit a three-run homer and Whipple was the winning pitcher for Kiester. Wyman Jensen homered for Ellendale.
25 years ago - 1983
Barry Hoyne scored a hole in one on the third hole at the Clarks Grove Golf Course.
The champions of the Green Lea Junior Golf League was the “Donkey Kong” team. Team members included Troy Peterson, Kent Porter, Dan Le and Alan Mullenbach.
Rookie Steve Schonert kicked a game winning 28-yard field goal for the Minnesota Vikings in their 19-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
The Austin High School girls tennis team defeated Albert Lea 4-1 in the season opening non-conference match. Angie Karau at No. 3 singles defeated Anne Nolan 7-5 and 6-2 for Albert Lea’s only win.
10 years ago - 1998
After five years as Albert Lea High School assistant girls tennis coach, Jody Young was named the new head coach.
The Minnesota Twins defeated the New York Yankees 5-3. The Twins defeated pitcher Andy Pettitte of the Yankees for the third straight time that year. Pitcher Dan Serafini improved his season record to 6-4.
The Minnesota Vikings raised their preseason record to 3-0 with a 25-22 win over Carolina. Kicker Gary Anderson kicked a field goal with 7:59 left in overtime for the victory.
