Tribune cancels forum coverage

Published Friday, August 29, 2008

The Tribune’s plans to cover the Albert Lea mayoral forum on Thursday were sent off track when news of the Minnesota Department of Health’s report on alleged abuses at Good Samaritan Society Albert Lea came out.

Tribune Managing Editor Tim Engstrom said he was sure readers would grasp the importance of the Good Sam situation and understand why the newspaper couldn’t staff the mayoral forum.

“It was an all-hands-on-deck situation,” he said.

Engstrom had intended to moderate the mayoral forum but had to cancel those plans, too.

Look to the Tribune for political coverage, particularly next week during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

Yes indeed dirt before politics.

"Look to the Tribune for political coverage, particularly next week during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul."

How reassuring.

While a myriad of news outlets will cover national politics next week, how is it the ALT can't seem to muster enough "hands" to report on local politics? And this was for the highest elected office in the city...the city the ALT is supposed to serve.

You expect us to believe that there wasn't one available ALT reporter to "staff" the forum? And that was with "all-hands-on-deck"?

Sounds like the "managing" occuring at the ALT requires substantial improvement.

Let's see...this article gets three comments - the Good Sam article gets thirty-three!

It should be the Albert Lea Enquirer.

ALT ... You can't handle two stories at the same time? Are you hiring? Heck, I would have covered it for you if you would have asked.

Both stories were big. One does not diminish the other in anyway. Both should have been covered. I'm very surprised you gave this topic it's own headline. Actually, I'm confused over the entire process. Care to elaborate on the discussion/decision omitting the Albert Lea mayoral forum?
