50 years ago - 1958
Division winners were decided in the Albert Lea Church Softball League. Grace Lutheran defeated Trinity Lutheran 9-6 to claim the title in the National Division. John Thorson was the winning pitcher for Grace. George Morley hit two home runs for Trinity. Presbyterian, behind the six hit pitching of Dick Westurn, defeated Conger Lutheran 7-2 to win the American Division.
25 years ago - 1983
The Sports in Store team won the Family “Y” Soccer League. Team members included Jose Dominguez, Erasmo Fuentes, Jim Callahan, Mike Ortiz, Remingio Salinas, Juan Perez, Nicholas Matinez, Roberto Rosales, Amador Ramirer, Carlos Ortiz, Hector Ortiz, Rafael Sachez, Alonso Hernandez, David Thompson, Bob Stoick and Roberto Romo (coach).
The Albert Lea High School girls tennis team defeated Faribault 5-0. Winners for Albert Lea were Angie Karau at No. 1 singles, Brenda Draayer at No. 2 singles, Katie Spelts at No. 3 singles, Barb Syverson and Jean Justesen at No. 1 doubles and Shari Anderson and Deann Loge at No. 2 doubles.
The Minnesota Twins defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-2. Kent Hrbek homered for the Twins and Al Williams was the winning pitcher.
10 years ago - 1998
The United South Central girls volleyball team opened their season with a win over Madelia 15-9, 15-4 and 15-6. Laura Birk led USC with eight kills.
The Albert Lea High School girls cross country team opened their season with wins over Owatonna 19-34 and Hayfield 19-188. Placings for Albert Lea were Melissa Roche — first, Jane Skrlin - third, Karissa Ladlie — fourth, Michelle Murray — sixth and Angie Schuhmacher — seventh. Albert Lea missed a perfect score by four points.
The Minnesota Twins were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6. Paul Moliter of the Twins hit his 600th double and joined Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner as the only players with 3,ooo hits, 600 doubles and 500 stolen bases.
