Tigers put up 10 goals in season opening win

Published Wednesday, December 3, 2008

The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team started the season with a 10-3 rout of Waseca Tuesday at the City Arena.

The Tigers (1-0-0) were up 2-0 after the first three minutes and held a 4-1 advantage after the first period.

Albert Lea added six goals in the second period and tallied 39 shots in the game.

Senior Grant Stadheim scored twice and freshman Eric Carlson scored two goals as well. Carlson finished plus-3 for the game while playing on the third line.

Three of the first four goals the Tigers scored came from the third line.

“It’s really hard to assess what you take away because you don’t play a high intensity game,” Albert Lea head coach Roy Nystrom said. “We showed a lot of speed and moved the puck around well.

Tyler Prihoda and Mitchell Sorenson scored nine seconds apart in the second period. Blake Adams, Jordan Prescher-Smerud, Carlson, and Stadheim each had goals in the second.

The Bluejays once in the first period and added two goals in the third period. The Tigers gave up one power play goal to Waseca in the third period, but played an otherwise clean game. Albert Lea had just four penalties in the game.

John Wrolson started in goal for the Tigers and played two periods, making 10 saves on 11 shots.

Albert Lea will have more of a challenge Friday when the team travels to Mankato West. The Scarlets lost a load of scoring from last year’s team, but still figure to be tough.

Way to go TIger Icemen. Thank you for providing Albert Lea with something to be proud of. Maybe if some of our other teams would take a look at the hockey and wrestling programs here in Albert Lea, we would have more to be proud of than just hockey and wrestling.

Sorry hockeymom...An all around congrats to the Albert Lea hockey program period. This is the first year that my family and I have been involved in the program and I am just blown away by the welcome that we have received from the AL hockey community. Where else can you find high school players practicing with kids as young as 7 and also having the varsity coach there as well. I am truely amazed. No wonder we are so successful.
