Live nativity, tree-lighting and concert top weekend activities

Crossroads Community Hospice will hold its tree-lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday on the front drive of Albert Lea Medical Center. The tree will remain lit through the holiday season.
The “Set Memories Aglow” tree is lit by donations in memory of a loved one, friend or for someone living you wish to honor. Donation form envelopes are available at the Albert Lea Medical Center Pharmacy, Alden Clinic, Kiester Clinic, Lake Mills Clinic, New Richland Clinic, Wells Clinic, KATE Radio, and Power 96. Crossroads Community Hospice provides support and care for people in the last phases of terminal illness so they might live as fully and comfortably as possible.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Dec. 5
- The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Trees will be open from noon to 4 p.m.
- Rick Mammel’s exhibit, “Life in the Mississippi,” will be open at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave., from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
- Simple Gifts, featuring guitarist Billy McLaughlin, will perform at 7 p.m. at the Lighthouse Event Center, 638 Marshall St. Tickets are $17 in advance at Tone Music in Albert Lea. They will be $20 at the door.
- Church of Christ-Christian, 1705 SE Marshall St., will hold its 15th annual drive-through live nativity from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
- Youth for Christ Mini Golf will be open at Northbridge Mall from 7 to 9 p.m. Cost is $5 per person.
- Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “Uh-Oh. Here Comes Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Art Center. For tickets, call 377-4371.
Saturday, Dec. 6
- Hayward Lutheran Church will hold a Christmas sale from 8 to 11 a.m. There will be a bake sale and morning coffee and homemade rolls. There will be a drawing for a quilt and quilt chest at 11 a.m. Tickets are available from any Hayward Lutheran Church WELCA member or at the church office.
- Albert Lea United Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale of Christmas decorations and gift items from 9 a.m. to noon. Coffee and Christmas goodies will be served. This is a fundraiser for Alpha Bible study course to be offered to the community in September.
- Northbridge Mall will host a model railroad show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Trees will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- The Fourth Annual Wishes & More pool and dart tournament will be held beginning with an 11 a.m. sign-in at the Albert Lea Eagles Club. Lunch and supper will be available. There will also be a silent auction from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wishes & More is a children’s wish-granting organization made up of seasoned wish-granting experts who want to provide a better wish experience to a larger base of qualified children in Minnesota.

Sunday, Dec. 7
- A benefit for 2-year-old Dacoda Malakowsky will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the New Richland City Hall. The New Richland Lions will serve a pancake breakfast. There will also be a silent auction. Dacoda, the son of David and Amanda Malakowsky of rural Hartland, suffers from pre-leukemia and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
- A bazaar and bake sale, in conjunction with Ellendale’s “Christmas in the Country” celebration, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in the Ellendale Community Building.
- Northbridge Mall will host a model railroad show from noon to 5 p.m.
- The Freeborn County Historical Museum will host its annual Christmas gathering, An Old-Fashioned Christmas, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 per person; members and children under 11 years will be admitted free.
