50 years ago - 1958
The Albert Lea Packers defeated Austin 5-4 and Mason City 8-5 in the Southern Minnesota League to improve their record to 9-4. Bill Ankoviak homered and pitcher Hal Snyder raised his season record to 4-2 in Albert Lea’s victory over Austin. Whitey Felker was the winning pitcher for the Packers against Mason City.
25 years ago - 1983
Ken Schrom won his sixth game of the season for the Minnesota Twins in their 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Winners in the 10 kilometer race at the Albert Lea Municipal Airport were Jeff Miller (top male finisher) and JoAnn Bracker (top female finisher).
The J ’ L Bowling Supplies team of Albert Lea placed 10th in the senior division of the 1983 Minnesota State Boys Junior Bowling Tournament. Team members included Guy Nelson, Jeff Kelley, Greg Moen, Jim Kelley and Kirk Schiltz.
10 years ago - 1998
In a nine-inning game the Alden American Legion baseball team improved their season record to 2-3 with a 5-4 victory over Glenville-Emmons. Winning pitcher Vinnie VanEnglenburg pitched a complete game.
The Albert Lea Elks U-17 boys soccer team won the Pan-O-Pang Tournament, shutting out three straight opponents. Team members included Bill Jones, Jesse Stenseth, Ben Smith, Roele Palome, Jens Levisen, Cody Habana, Matt Humphrey, Paul Olsen, Dan Ravenhorst, Brandon Plantage, Luke Behrends, Grant Neitzell, Mike Linnes and Scott Kallemeyn. The team was coached by Rich Hobson and assisted by Jay Neitzell.
Awards presented to the Albert Lea High School softball players included: Senior Plaques — Renae Knudtson, Samatha Haroldson and Amy Hickman; Most Improved — Amy Adams; Defensive Award — Amand Evenson; True Grit — Jess Hanson; Coaches Award — Amy Hickman; All-Conference Honorable Mention — Amy Hickman.
