50 years ago - 1958

The Albert Lea Pee Wee Lions hockey team defeated Austin 6-1. Scoring goals for the Lions were Ray Sorenson (2), Tom Guiney (2), Gary Lee and Emery Bowman.

The Wells High School basketball team raised its season record to 10-6 with a 48-36 victory over Albert Lea. Scott Ross led Wells with 18 points and Bill Hanthorn added 14. Dave Donovan scored 12 points for Albert Lea.

The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team edged Austin 115-105 to win the district title and advance to the region competition. Advancing to region were Allan Stolze at 103, Bob Hendrickson at 112, Lewis Kennedy at 133, Dennis Breamer at 145, Ed Hoeve at 165 and Tom Brooke at 175.

25 years ago - 1983

Jon Christian scored the winning goal at 4:28 of overtime to give The Albert Lea Tigers hockey team a 4-3 win over Owatonna.

In girls Border League basketball Freeborn defeated Emmons 52-51. Denise Stiernagle scored 13 points and Joanie Schuster 12 for Freeborn. Emmons was led in scoring by Marcia Flaskerud with 18 points and Sherri Lauen with 15.

Dave Ehrhard won the Region 1AA wrestling title at 167 and heavyweight Jeff Dillemuth placed second for the Albert Lea Tigers and both wrestlers advanced to the state tournament.

The Minnesota Gophers defeated Wisconsin 78-71 in a Big Ten Conference basketball game. Randy Breuer scored 31 points and Tommy Davis 14 for the Gophers.

10 years ago - 1998

The ALHS boys’ swimming team scored 252 points to second place Winona’s 189 to win their fourth title in five years. Erick Johnson won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke for the Tigers.

The Lake Mills Bulldogs finished the wrestling regular season with a perfect 16-0 record after defeating Riceville 42-18. Winning matches for the Bulldogs were David Back at 103, Brady Johnson at 112, Brad Helgeson at 125, Josh Eidness at 135, Drew Steele at 152, Jesse Locke at 160, Brian Budach at 171, Joe Ritzert at 189 and John Skatter at heavyweight.

Marie Lindeman scored 12 points for the Alden-Conger girls’ basketball team in its 36-31 win over Glenville-Emmons. G-E was led by Shanna Dagestad with 15 points and Jenny Schrader with 10.
