50 years ago - 1958
Dick Stadheim pitched a complete game for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team in their 7-3 win over Mason City. Junior Pierce, Bob Bohland and Dick Anderson each had two hits for Albert Lea.
Ken Heine hit two home runs to lead Conger Lutheran to a 12-2 victory over Salem Lutheran in the Albert Lea Church Softball League.
Paul Wilke defeated Dave Olson to win the senior boys’ singles title in the Albert Lea Park and Recreation tennis tournament. Robert Jenson defeated Gaylen Jenson in the junior boys’ singles division and Mary Jordahl defeated Sue Stadheim to win the junior girls’ singles title. Dave Olson and Gary Herman defeated Rich Olphant and Paul Wilke for the senior boys’ title.

Kevin McHale signed a four-year contract with the Boston Celtics for $1 million per year.
Members of the Albert Lea Pee Wee baseball team playing in the Stars of Tomorrow Tournament in LaCrosse, Wis., included Troy Nelson, Tony Farrel, Chris Hallum, Jeremy Garbers, Chad Adams, Paul Heckmann, Dan Jesse, Eric Kosmoski, Kyle Werner, Jeff Troska, Troy Hansen, Mike Schiltz and Aaron Davis.
Winning the Pee Wee mixed softball title in the Freeborn County 4-H Softball Tournament was the Hayward 4-H. Team members included Lynn Kermes, Todd Butts, Nate Skaar, Tom Habana, Tad Lunning, Karl Eggum, Dennis Glassel, Dawn Jenson, Neil Kermes, Tom Butts, Trent Lunning, Teddy Eggum, Connie Brandt, Jim Ignham, Kyle Iverson, Alex Kromminga and Angie Brandt.

The Lake Mills High School girls’ softball team won its fourth consecutive district title. In the semi-final round the Bulldogs defeated Northwood-Kensett 12-0. Sarah Gudmonson, Devan Escherich and Andrea Osheim each had two hits and Kelly Nelson had four RBIs for Lake Mills. Lake Mills defeated North Sentral 11-0 in the title game. Leading hitters for Lake Mills were Escherich, Osheim and Kim Gaskill with two each. Jessica Ball was the winning pitcher in both games.
In the opening round of district play the Albert Lea U-15 boys’ soccer team defeated the Dakota Rebels 4-0. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Chris Thomas (2), Josh Kasper and Jesse Sheeran.
