Here are local and area highlights in history for July 31, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1989 — Minnesota Festival Theatre was looking for a shaggy dog in the Albert Lea area to play the part of Sandy in the play, “Annie.”

1979 — Richard Rooney, a member of the Albert Lea Police Department for 12 years, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

1969 — Over 2,500 projects by 4-H members were on display at the Freeborn County Fair.
