Not a routine rout for Lake Mills softball

It’s hard to imagine that a team scored 17 runs in a ball game actually trailed for half of the game, but that’s exactly what happened Friday when the Lake Mills softball team traveled to Belmond-Klemme.

The Bulldogs (10-2 overall, 3-1 NIC) were losing 4-3 after a scoreless third inning but Lake Mills head coach Stacie Gaskill told her team to try to score two runs an inning and they would be all right.

The Bulldogs struck for two runs in the fourth to take the lead 5-4 and then added 11 more runs in the final two innings to leapfrog over the Broncos for the win.

“We set a goal of scoring two runs per inning our and our girls were aggressive running the bases,” Gaskill said. “After that we kept scoring.”

It seems whatever Gaskill tells her team they do and that includes Sabrina Roll who led Lake Mills on offense with a 3-for-3 night at the plate and drove in three runs.

After learning how to bunt Wednesday, Roll laid down a couple of nice bunts Thursday in a win against Northwood-Kensett, but decided to try hitting Friday.

“I told her just to do what you feel comfortable doing,” Gaskill said. “They trust me and simply do what I ask them.”

Eighth-grader Josie Brackey threw very well going 4 2/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits to get the win.
