With just a few days to recover from the Worth County Fair, the city’s sesquicentennial celebration kicks off July 3 and lasts through the holiday to July 6. A multitude of activities and events are set for the weekend.
Planned for July 3 are a disc golf competition at Swensrud Park, NSB Bank’s 75th anniversary party, the beginning of a Beards and Bonnets contest, an adult beverage garden with a disc jockey, a Texas hold’em tournament at the fire station, a youth dance at the baseball diamond, sand volleyball and the Salute to Northwood Show. And that’s all in one day.
Friday brings tours of the downtown district, the Top of Iowa Tractors of the Past museum and a tea for the former Northwood school queens among many other activities. More events, games and food will be at Swensrud Park along with the Ms. and Mr. Northwood and the Beards and Bonnets awards.
The Fourth of July Parade travels down Central Avenue. The Beatles’ tribute band British Export will perform before the fireworks at dusk.

Festivities wrap up July 6 with an outdoor worship service and a performance by Living Sacrifice in Swensrud Park followed by a community picnic.
They’re going to be busy having fun in Northwood the next couple of weeks. It should be a lot of fun without needing to drive very far.
