50 years ago - 1956
— The Albert Lea Tigers defeated Owatonna 26-12 in Big Nine football. Earl Ashpole ran for 99 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Tigers and Roger Villarreal scored on a 53-yard run and gained 95 yards in 10 carries.
— Kiester defeated Freeborn 27-7 in high school football. Darrel Mutschler scored on runs of 1 and 41 yards, DeLyle Fure ran for a 2-yard touchdown and Garry Aske scored on a 49-yard interception for Kiester. Chuck Goette scored for Freeborn.
25 years ago - 1981
— The Barbers touch football team from Albert Lea remained undefeated in the Austin Touch Football League with a 33-2 victory over the Leisure Bar team of Austin. Quarterback Vern Frydenlund of the Barbers threw three touchdown passes and intercepted four passes.
— The Albert Lea High School boys’ cross country team advanced to the state tournament after winning the Region 1AA title. The Tigers beat second place Lakeville 69-85. Individual qualifiers for the Tigers were Chris Hall in fourth place and Steve Capistrant in fifth.
— Bricelyn, the second-ranked team in Minnesota by the Associated Press in nine man football, defeated Kiester-Walters 40-12 and won the Border League title.
10 years ago - 1996
— The ALHS girls’ volleyball team closed its regular season by defeating Northfield 15-1, 15-13 and 15-5 improving its season record to 15-9. April Larson had 11 kills and Jenny Holman 10 for Albert Lea.
— Senior Melissa Mattson of Alden-Conger recorded her 1,000 kill in their 15-6,15-11 and 15-5 win over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. Mattson had 19 kills and Marie Lindeman seven for A-C. A-C season record moved to 16-5-1.
— The ALHS girls’ cross country finished second to Faribault, 91-61 in Section 1AA. Top finishers for Albert Lea were Jane Skrlin (4th), Desiree Budd (5th) and Melissa Roche (6th).
— The United South Central girls’ tennis team finished second in the Minnesota State Tournament. USC defeated Winona Cotter 4-3 in the first round, Crookston 4-3 in the second round and then fell to Breck 7-0 in the finals.
