'Extreme Makeover' airing date is official

Published Friday, November 7, 2008

The broadcast date on the ABC television network of the episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" about the Dirk and Susan DeVries family of Hayward Township has been set.

The show, titled "DeVries Family," will air from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 7. A special on "Extreme Makeover" host Ty Pennington will air from 6 to 7 p.m. that same night. It is titled "Ty Pennington: Behind the Scenes."

The eight days of Sept. 30 to Oct. 8 were hectic. The "Extreme Makeover" producers knocked on the door of the DeVries family on Sept. 30. The next day they were sent on a vacation to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Larson Contracting and volunteer workers demolished their house Oct. 2 and began building a new home in about 100 hours. The house was finished on Oct. 5, and the keys to the new house were handed over Oct. 6. On Oct. 7 — the big day — the rain-soaked crowd of onlookers hollered, "Move that bus!" while the DeVrieses stood wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the surprise of seeing their new house. On Oct. 8, the family received more gifts from the community, including a new Ford pickup from Poet and ethanol producers.

I recently heard that the family was looking for a new home for their house pets. Pets that they had for a couple of years. The reasoning given was health reasons. If that was the case why would they have had pets to begin with. Being an avid animal lover, I was disappointed to hear that the pets are not going to be part of the family anymore.

I am an animal lover too but allergies and health problems sometimes do occur after you have acquired these pets. It is not anything anyone can help and sometimes that is the only solution for someone with those health problems. My daugher developed Asthma. We had had a cat for three years before this problem developed and she became very allergic to cats. After many hospital stays our pediatrician made the determination the cat had to go. We saw that the cat had a good home. It was a choice between keeping a beloved pet or my daughters health. After a thorough cleaning of the house so it was clean from pet dander, the asthma got much better. Sometimes there is no choice. Please do not be so quick to judge.

I agree with sunflower, sometimes health reactions to animals aren't apparent until after the fact. Hopefully these animals will find good homes.

That is why they want the pets to go to someone they know and will love them the way they do! Because of their health and the new filtration system in the house is why they have to give up their beloved pets.

So you all think that these health problems just occured immediately after they received the new house? Not during the 2 or 3 years they had these animals? And wouldn't the new filtration system help with any animal issues? I find the timing suspicous is all. If they don't want the animals to ruin thier new home or furniture they should be willing to say it. Because we just don't have enough abandoned animals out there, do we. Maybe some of these donations could be given to the Humane Society in Freeborn County so they can build there new shelter. And correct me if I am wrong there are going to be new property tax rates associated with this new house. I hope that was considered before so this family doesn't have to have more of a challenge, financially. I guess I like to be more sensible about things. Especially with the present economic conditions. Fiscal responsibility and all that. Not just good television watching.

You people are idiots, I know this family and they are very upset about the animals. Is it so difficult to be happy for someone.

Posted by sunflower (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 9:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Is it any of our business if this family chooses to find other good homes for their pets? This family had a wonderful thing happen for them. The story was about when the show is going to air and all of a sudden from this story the debate is about whether or not they should keep their pets. That is their decision. It is not any of our business. Lets leave this family alone to make their own choices and to live their lives. Live your life, give your donations where you want them to go and let other people live their lives. I am sure those that are critical would not want someone else telling them what to do with their life.

I, too, feel kind of suspicious about the cat giving allergies and then asthma, to boot! Sometimes a doctor's diagnosis is wrong; maybe they need two opinions. Or, just possibily it may be something in the new house that is causing this allergy and it's not the cat. By the way, I haven't heard what the wonderful things are that this family has done to qualify for all these goodies. Does anyone know and if so, could you write it here for those of us to read that don't know? They must be quite a family. I hope that they will be able to keep up with their taxes and other monies to include bills, etc, that will arise periodically.

What a sad day to air the DeVries show, December 7, 1941. That was the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and President Franklin Roosevelt declared War against Japan which was the start of World War II.

You people need to get real lives. And leeleebelle, I am sure they didn't purposely pick that day because it had to do with Pearl Harbor. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I think the posting of comments needs to go away. I have been guilty also, but no more.

Please use caution when talking about things that you do not know anything about.
I mean Pearl Harbor day-really! I do not think that ABC,who chooses this day said hey-lets put this show on this day to be mean to southern Minnesota just for kicks.
It picked this day because Extreme Home Makeover airs on Sundays. Sunday just happened to fall on December 7, 2008 this year and they chose it as part of the regular airing dates of its show.
While using this forum please count to ten prior to writing and hitting send on your computer.
This forum is a good tool, but needs to be used with caution-a lot like a car.
If you are bitter about the show or just are a bitter person, please wait 24 hours prior to posting because the 10 seconds will not be enough time for your heart to heal and make you rethink what you are about to send.
Thank you.

I am soooo looking forward to seeing this show. Doesn't matter when it airs...What a great celebration for all of us. Like Martha Stewart says: It is a good thing....

Thanks Sschmeltzer. To those that have to negatively speculate, I also had a cat for years and 1 day my eyes started burning and nose running. It is impossible to live with animals you are allergic to. Any contact with the dander and it gets miserable real quick. All of us that have animals know how difficult it is to give them away....just be happy for them as they have been through some tough times. What a great opportunity for our fellow neighbors in Freeborn Cnty.

I'm very happy for the family and what has been given to them. They have every right to make an educated decision to live pet free for whatever reason they choose. If you don't agree with their decision too bad. Posting your pitiful comments on here is not going to change anything. (Demo1969) - if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything at all. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you judge.

i too have asked many people what made this family so deserving and not one person has been able to answer that. they say oh he lost his arm in an accident. and?????? he's lived with it all these years. she's a teacher. so????? i'm sure there must have been something that made them get picked but so far i've never heard what it really was. maybe i'll find out when the show airs. i'm glad they got a new house and all. don't get this wrong. i just want to know just what made them deserving. anyone know?

Posted by albertlea1 (anonymous) on November 7, 2008 at 1:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Either they sent in their story or someone else did. ABC or Extreme Home Makeover picked this family and thought they were deserving. Good for them!!!! It doesn't matter what family was picked - someone wouldn't think they deserved it.

Ok. I have taken advice as given by one of the commenters prior to me, and thought this over before even typing. We lived in a house that was full of mold. Our son developed severe asthma that was seemingly triggered by most anything. Once we moved, it took quite a few months to get things figured out, as to what specifically sparked the attacks (allergy wise), and during that time found out that our son is also seemingly allergic to most airborne things. I say this only to draw a potential parallell. These guys had a rough house. Through a wonderful opportunity, were able to recieve a brand new house, complete with a filtration system. Could it be that there may have been an allergic reaction that was not known through all of the problems with the other house? Yes the filtration system is there, but I know from experience that those only work so well. Maybe it is because of the filtration system that they found they were allergic to the animals, I have no clue and are not aiming to judge. Just trying to point out as others before me have done, that there could very well be other factors that no one knows about, and since it was a family decision (based on the fact that all of this IS fact and not rumors), we should all stop speculating.

I am very happy for this family and wish them the best. Also I too cannot wait to see the show when it airs. On the down side.... I think that enough is enough. Everytime I turn around its Extreme Makeover this or that. Is it just me or that is getting sick of all the hub bub. I feel terrible for saying this but it is the truth. I know some will say I am just jealous because it was not me picked, but I cannot think of anyone that on some level wished it were them and not the DeVries, maybe my attention span is just too short.

My sister had a cat when I was growing up. I had no problems with him.

When living in Hawaii years later, I got a kitten from a litter we found while on Shore Patrol.

After the kitten grew, I had breathing problems. Turns out, over the years I developed an allergy to cats that is severe today. The ship's doc told me that if I didn't avoid cats I should ensure someone was around with epinephrine.

It can and does happen... chill about the pets. The important thing is they will ensure they go to a good home if the family cannot keep them.

It isn't the business of anyone but the family and the recipients of the pets. CHILL

Happy for the family and can't wait to see the show!

Amazing, twenty some comments about pets and all the article says is when the show is being aired.

I agree Wildbill...These people are soooo annoying...Give it up already..

So what, about the pets!... Move the ..... pets into the barn, make them comfortable and let them live in their own little space? I love pets too, but health first!
Enough with the discussion of that!
Lets cheer on the Devries family on the 7th of December! (and oh.. forget the stupid date that ABC chose to air this great special!)
(Stupid, meaning how anyone can drag down the high of the Devries family, reminiscent Pearl Harbor! NO CONNECTION, only the date!) jeees people, get a life!

Are you people freakin' kidding me? Did you all just honestly have an argument about pets and pearl harbor and who deserved what? Who cares? It's ABC's show, it's their decision who they give a house to, who cares why they pick anyone. If they want to give a house to someone even for a stupid reason like having brown hair or something ridiculous like that, they can, it's their show. I can't believe I just wasted my time reading all of these, I feel stupider having been a part of it.

Seriously, get a life. Or at least a hobby. Perhaps one that doesn't involve ridiculous comments.

I suppose all TV must stop to honor the memory of Pearl Harbor Day?

It happens to fall on a Sunday, and that is the normal air date for the show. It was stated the show would air early December when they were filming. It was also stated that shows typically take up to eight weeks to edit. Hmmmm.

7 Oct - 7 Dec sounds like they were right on that schedule....

I have been to the USS Arizona (re-enlisted there) and seen the memorials. I pay homage in my own way, however, I also watch TV later in the day.

Those complaining about the choice of the coincidental date must have wonderful lives if this is all they can find to piss and moan about.

I hope the family enjoys their new home and live long healthy lives because of its introduction into their lives.
