Editorial: Franken lawsuit is not needed
Published Friday, November 21, 2008
Some folks have grumbled about the cost of holding the recount in the U.S. Senate race. It is likely to have a $100,000 price tag. But even libertarians generally agree that if there one thing that government does is handle elections. If there is one expense the taxpayers can pay for, it is making sure the recount is done properly.
That said, we are disappointed that DFL candidate Al Franken has launched a lawsuit to gain access to rejected absentee ballots. That lawsuit is only going to drag the process longer than it needs to be and it will cost the taxpayers more money in court costs.
Our point: Franken needs to trust the secretary of state and the 87 county auditors to do their jobs and do them well. The system in place is open and transparent. A lawsuit at this point is like trying to change the rules of a football game during the overtime period. Let’s play by the rules of the existing recount lawbook.

I don't agree, ADH editor, to be fair all votes should be examined.
MN election officials have a record of great accountability. Why would only one official object to having certain ballots reviewed?
Time & cost is not the issue, fairness is.

So what about the four lawsuits Coleman has filed over the recount??

This has to take the cake for the most idiotic article I've ever read in this paper. Not a very easy thing to accomplish either. I don't quite think you understand the concept of a recount. If they just 'trusted' the election officials like you suggest they wouldn't need a recount in the first place would they? What exactly was going through your head when you were writing this completely self-contradictory article?

Not sure how the count is going today, or if they are taking the weekend off, but it looks like Franken has picked up quite a few new votes. This proves that we are human and make mistakes. Keep on counting, its the only fair way to determine a winner.
