Man loses part of arm to train
Police say he was crawling under cars
Published Friday, October 3, 2008
WELLS A 51-year-old man lost part of his right arm Thursday morning when a train ran over it.
According to a Wells Police Department report, the man, Duane Giese, apparently was lying between the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern tracks and the west side of North Broadway. The train was switching cars. The police report said Giese attempted to crawl under the train’s cars when he was injured — resulting in the amputation of part of his right arm.
After, Giese was conscious and talking with rescue workers. Responding were the Wells Police Department, Wells Fire Department, Wells Ambulance, Faribault County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol.
A Mayo Clinic helicopter based in Mankato took off Thursday morning in Wells from the parking lot of Wells Municipal Liquor. An Iowa, Chicago & Eastern train was stopped on the railroad.
Giese was flown to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. As of 9:20 a.m. Friday, he was listed in serious condition.
The liquor store in Wells is on Broadway, a north-south route. The tracks runs east-west through the city.

WHY DOES IT SEEM TO HAPPEN THAT EVERYTIME THEY POST ANYTHING ON HERE PEOPLE JUST HAVE TO TALK SO NEGATIVE. I THINK IT IS GOOD THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO PUT THINGS ON THE SITE FAST EVEN IF IT IS LIMITED INFO.

ALBERTLEAB
If you read the article it states that the helicopter landed in the liquor store parking lot. Whats so wrong with that, I dont know Wells to good so hell it might help me find it some time?

I think that some people who come onto this website think that they could have written the article better the people who actually do it for a living. I do think that they put the option of posting a comment for the result of hearing thoughts on the story not about the writer themself. albertleab, maybe you should send your comment to letters to the editor??

The place where the helicopter landed is south of the railroad tracks involved and north of the liquor store-hence the reason the Tribune listed the liquor store in the article! Some people do not know where either of these are located but you can bet that the next time they're in Wells they'll remember that by the journalists' choice of listing the location.
Granted, yes, some of the wording is a bit off and the journalist could have proofed their work just a bit more before putting this to press. On the contrary, someone was injured here and required medical attention...who gives a crap about the gossip!

and one more thing, not to mention that the railroad crosses at least 6 intersections that I can think of in the city of Wells...readers want to know the who what when where and how...get over yourself AlbertLeaB...

albertleab-
i live in Wells, it's small-yes but when someone called to tell me what had happened (i was out of town) i didn't know where it happened since there are quite a few crossing over these tracks that glide through the entire town. Now that i read it was by the Liquor Store I know where it happened. Good thing there was the lot there for the helicopter to land-another thing i was wondering when someone mentioned Mayo came in-"where would they land in Wells". You are kind of a ...... as mentioned above-get over yourself.

There is no reason he should have been crawling under the train to begin with! I understand a child making that mistake but a grown man? The 5 year old child that was killed by the train several years ago was doing what she had seen the big kids do and unfortunately was killed. But this is an adult man! What is wrong with people?!!

Maybe you should know the man a little better before you cast judgement about "what is wrong with people." Have you never driven around a cross-arm at a RR intersection?? Have you never rolled through a stop sign??? I'm sure in your perfect little world you haven't done anything that may be considered "stupid" by someone else right????? He was coming back from the grocery store, didn't want to wait for the train and in the midst of moving his groceries the train started to move! Stupid? Yes, but the fact of the matter is this man was injured and will have to deal with this the rest of his life. Some of you are so hypocritcal! Always gotta be a few asses in the barn!

Everyone makes mistakes. We're only human. I hope he can recover emotionally from the loss of losing part of his arm.

Amen shedaisy! And we learn from them! People who know this man actually won't be too surprised if more indepth information comes out!

something like this doesn't affect us unless we know the person.
someone knows this person. he is someone's son, could be father, brother, friend. this is affecting people.
it is easy to look at the situation from a reader's perspective and judge how stupid it was etc... but it really tends to be insensitive to those who are affected by this personally.
someday something will affect us personally and we will kick ourselves for making an error in judgement.
at that time, we will pray that people won't condemn us or call us stupid for doing something that is life altering.

albertleab you are an idiot!!!

I wasn't calling anyone stupid. I do know who he is. I don't understand why someone would crawl under a train. I have stood and waited in that same spot for that train many times and never once considered crawling under it.

stewie: your comment came across as judgmental and harsh. without being there and being the person involved, we cannot know what led to the accident.

I have a very healthy respect for trains. I know someone who lost her husband to a train/car accident. I know the young man that was hit by the train by Manchester years ago. I knew the little girl in Wells that was killed by the train... I have been affected by train accidents. If it came across harsh and judgemental, it was not intended to be. It's just hard to understand why someone would crawl under a train!

It doesn't matter how or why it happened. What matters is that a man was hurt. He doesn't need our criticism. He needs our prayers and support.

Maybe you should become a reporter albertleab, seems like you know "how" it should be done.

Brings back memories, been a long time (25 years) since I lived in Wells. Remember waiting for trains many times.
Praying for whomever it was, but I very likely know him.

i was born in wells and know the town very well. if any of you have been there you would know that they don't have a hospital anymore and they don't have a helipad so the pilot probably thought that that that would be the right place to land. also i don't know the man but i also don't care how he got hurt. it only matters that he got hurt. my thoughts and prayers are with the family whomever it may be. it is tragic no matter what. maybe instead of writing things negative all the time, you should be thankful it wasn't your family.

It is definately not the Greater Northern Flesh Eating Spoonbill. Shoot one of those, and you'll know it!
Yikes, get a life or have another beer from the liquor store in Wells.

I don't normally post but I can't help it tonight!! As a person who work in EMS I have to respond to the comments about where the helicopter landed. Who cares where the h___ it lands as long as it is there. This service is so vital to our work in rural EMS. We need to thank God for this service and not worry about what parking lot it lands in. This service saves so much time in critacal situtations. It is most of the time life or death. I don't know the man involved nor am I from the Wells area but I am praying for him and his family. What a tragedy! Please think of them and the EMS workers who were there to help him. This type of situation is high stress for these workers and can cause some intense emotions.

albertleab I read the story 3 minutes after it was printed before it was updated and I still disagree with you yes the details were little but it was what we want from the reporters. I live in Wells and saw every thing as it happened I thought the article was a good one for the info they had. There job is to REPORT NEWS and that is exactly what they did. Thank you Albert Lea Tribune as a member of Wells I was able to find out what happened from you. As for the Picture of the van it is on the other side of the helicopter and Squad truck SO how could that worry anyone. albertleab Get a grip and if you dont like the way they report a story dont look at this free version wait for the paper to come out or better yet dont even support the Tribune. Give them a break

My thoughts are with the victim and his family.
Albertleab and Virginian are a lot alike, they are all knowing and perfect. Seems like no matter what kind of a story comes in the paper, they could do it better. As in V's eyes, there is no other than the Rep. party. You two need to get out of LaLaland like you tell so many people. If you read any paper, they have all made an error at one time or another. We are humans, we make mistakes, we learn from them (hopefully) we try to correct them. Enough said.

For all that want to assume or argue. The man was walking home from the grocery store. The man decided to cross. Why he crossed, how he crossed and what happened next is between him and God. The point of crossing was where the helicopter was in the picture and the closes open area to land. So thank God they were close to load him. Remember we all are accountable for our actions. His are on display and so are ours.

I have learned from reading the newspaper and watching the local news stations, you can not believe everything they put out there. For example: the age of Dirk DeVries, at one time I read he is 45 years of age and another time he is 50 years old. I just know that these reporters and or journalist can make several mistakes in their reporting. And no, I know I can't do their job nor would I want to. I sometimes wonder how they can sleep at night, knowing the information that they have reported on may not be correct. Trust me I know and I have read articles of individuals that I know and I know what was written about them was totally out of line. Unless you hear it from the person themselves, don't believe everything you hear or read.
Trust me I know!
So, regarding this poor soul that has lost part of his arm. We don't know what his reasoning was that day?

I have lived by train tracks since the day i was born and that was a long time ago. As a child i learned to respect trains and i taught my children and grandchildren to respect them also. I have never and would never even think of crawling under a train. That's a no brainer. A grown man crawling under a train? What was he thinking?
