50 years ago - 1958
Keith Fligge of Albert Lea defeated Tom Carlson 8-7 to win the 1958 Green Lea Golf Club Championship.
The Glenville football team defeated Lyle 12-7. Lorean Minear scored on an eight yard run and Bob Machacek scored on a 5-yard run for Glenville.
Wells High School defeated Mapleton 37-7. Scoring touchdowns for Wells were Larry McNeil (2), Don Schmitt, Steve Kirkeibe, Mark Keuchenmiester and Danny Roberts.
25 years ago - 1983
Darris Porter, a 1981 graduate of Albert Lea High School, carried the ball 35 times for 125 yards and one touchdown for Rochester Community College in their 15-10 win over Willmar. Darris has gained 417 yards to date in four games.
The Albert Lea High School football team was defeated by Minneapolis Washburn 25-6. The Tigers scored on a 23-yard pass from Scott Butt to Tom Sorenson.
Kiester-Walters shutout Freeborn 27-0 in a Border League East football game. Mike Gormley gained 129 yards on 25 carries and Al Aukes gained 100 yards on 16 carries.
The New Richland-Hartland football team defeated Ellendale-Geneva 13-8. Ed Deml scored the touchdown for E-G.
10 years ago - 1998
The Alden-Conger volleyball team improved to 7-3 in the Gopher Conference with a 3-1 win over Bethlehem Academy. Tessa Niebuhr had 12 kills for A-C.
The Albert Lea High School boys’ soccer team defeated Owatonna 7-0. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Max Beers (2), Brandon Plantage, Wilfredo Palome, Dan Ravenhorst, Scott Kallemeyn and Rally Palome. The Tigers had an overall record of 9-4.
The Glenville-Emmons Wolverines girls’ volleyball team won the consolation title at the LeRoy-Ostrander Invitational. The Wolverines lost to Mabel-Canton 2-0 and Southland 2-0. They came back to defeat LeRoy Red 2-0, Grand Meadow 2-0 and Rushford-Peterson 2-1. Katie Thofson had 13 ace serves for the day for G-E.
