Published Wednesday, October 22, 2008

The Salem Lutheran (Albert Lea) Women’s Executive Board met Oct. 7. The meeting began with a devotion offered by Kathy DePoppe. President Judy Dilling presided. Pauline Hall read the minutes of the September board meeting in the absence of Secretary Nancy Lahs. Sharon Dilling distributed the treasurer’s report for all to review.

Mary Gulbrandson, wedding committee chairwoman, reported three weddings to be held at Salem on Oct. 16, Dec. 13 and Dec. 27. Several changes relating to weddings were discussed. Sarah Circle served the coffee hour at St. John’s Lutheran Home on Oct. 19. At the last meeting, a letter written by Lois Anderson was distributed to all board members suggesting ways to a help finance more women of Salem to attend the Triennial Convention in Spokane, Wash., in 2011. The women were to bring the letter to their circles for review and comments, approval and other ideas. Suggestions were brought back to the board, but the item was tabled until 2009.

The Blue Earth River Conference was held at the Good Shepherd Church in Wells on Oct. 11. Several Salem ladies will attend. The Salem Women’s dedication dinner was held Oct. 20. The offering received at that event will be given to Salem’s pastor’s discretionary fund, the Salvation Army Food Shelf, and Salem youth going to Jamaica. A letter was mailed to all Salem women inviting them to the dedication dinner. Jan Jerdee gave a program on “crystals” at that dinner. The board agreed to serve the St. John’s coffee hour three Sunday’s during 2009. Salem will not be doing cheer programs for St. John’s during 2009.

There was discussion on supplies needed for Salem’s new kitchen. The kitchen committee had compiled a list of necessary items to be purchased for the kitchen and Judy Dilling was authorized by the WELCA Board to purchase the items needed. Coffee was discussed, possibly having WELCA pay for all coffee used. It was decided to continue having each circle provide coffee whenever serving. Buying Caruba Coffee was suggested. World Community Day, a Church Women United Celebration, will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Friday, Nov. 7, at 9:15 a.m.

Committee reports were given. Pauline Hall reported that 24 Salem shut-ins had been called on in September. The shut-in team continues to call on the second Wednesday of each month. Sew ‘N Tell ladies met on Sept. 9 and Sept. 23. They packed 32 boxes of used clothing for the Marie Sandvik Center and a large box of coats, 10 boxes of used clothing for Appalachia and two boxes for the V.A. Four quilts and three lap robes were also made. Deb Beighley announced all bracelets had been sold and reordering cannot be done for a time. She also mentioned other fundraisers and that the Salem Over 60 group was doing a quilt raffle.

The next board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
