Freeborn motorist reportedly robbed, assaulted

Incident occurred on Interstate 90

Published Thursday, September 11, 2008

A 39-year-old man was reportedly assaulted and robbed on the side of Interstate 90 Tuesday night after he ran out of gas about five miles west of Austin in Freeborn County.

Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig said a Minnesota State Patrol trooper called county dispatchers at 11:04 p.m. Tuesday notifying them he had checked out a vehicle that was off to the side of the road at about mile marker 169.

The driver of the car, Charles Owen Miller, of Freeborn, had run out of gas on his way to work in Austin and was waiting for someone to bring him help, Harig said.

A short while after the trooper left, a white, mid-’90s Chevy Suburban pulled up near him, the sheriff said.

Two Hispanic men got out of the vehicle, asked Miller what was wrong, and Miller explained he was trying to get to work, Harig said. The men responded they could give him a ride to work, that they were headed that way, and then proceeded to ask him how much money he had.

Miller asked them why they wanted to know, and the men said it was because they were going to take it, Harig said. He gave them the $35 he had and then complained about them taking the money.

One of the men punched Miller in the stomach, and then they both left, Harig said, noting the report.

“To actually have somebody pull over and rob somebody alongside the road is very unusual,” Harig said. “We haven’t had any other reports of that.”

Because Miller wasn’t able to provide any more detailed descriptions of the men — including their hair length, hair color, body size, or height — or the license plate of the Suburban, it will probably be hard to track down the men involved, Harig said.

Dispatchers received a call of the assault and robbery around 11:30 p.m.

Desert Dog...I agree! That would solve a lot of problems around here!

Mr. Miller,
I'm sorry for the ordeal you must have went through, hopefully these 2 people will be caught and punished. Makes a person afraid to accept help from anyone.

This is extremely sad, and very unfortunate that the police don't have further information to track these criminals down. Eventually, justice will prevail.

purduekelli - You are one of the smartest and most level headed people I know...don't let somebody like Virginian push your buttons. Keep standing up for what you believe in!

We need the southern border fence completed and more policing off all borders. These terrorists have got to be stopped! The immigration laws that are in place need to be enforced! This is madness! We are being attacked by terrorists in our own hometowns! Our country is becoming less safe all the time!

Did he ever make it to his work ?

Posted by BB27 (anonymous) on September 11, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

How come he did not know their height? Its an awful scenario, but if they were outside the car and punched him, he could at least say "they were the same height as me" or something like that. whole thing sounds fishy.

run out of things to say? never.

my children are of mixed race, so i let them read comments such as yours and Virginians so as they grow up, they can understand that people who JUDGE them because of race are simply ignorant and not worth our time of day! liberal i might be, but i stand my ground and don't believe in hate or bitterness towards one particular race, culture or religion. if you chose to, that's up to you - but i won't raise my children to hate or discriminate - to me, it's pure ignorance!!!

desertdog - While I have never joined the military, I do hold a Bachelor of Science from an excellent University and have a law degree from an even better college. I have worked amongst the best employers in my field and I'm not from Albert Lea - not from Minnesota at all!

What's better yet - I am a law abiding citizen and stay true to my own personal beliefs and values. I don't compromise for anybody and I stay true to who I am.

I won't see here and justify if my comments "carry enough weight" - who are you to judge that - I don't even know you?!?!

Mr. Miller, I hope you are recovering and I wish you the best! After all, you are the FOCUS of this article.

how come this article gets 41 now 42 posts but no one responds to the low voter turn out is there something wrong here. I think he made it up because he does not get the plate number and picks on a group where many people are located. I mean he was punched in the stomach and could not give any more info on his assailants. Please Mr. Miller you could have done better or at least take the punch like a man and hit back.

You say that "anyone that comes to this country should be ready to leave there own countries ideals behind and not expect us to give up our rights and privileges and long practiced traditions." But you do forget that most peoples ancestors did make the true americans here do just that!!And you say "as long as we continue down that dark path, we will be fueling racism, not curtailing it" and say that "We need to demand that they become Americans to live here because that is who occupies this land." In saying this you may show ignorance (not saying you are) because then you should take time to know and follow the customs and traditions of Native Americans beliefs; not those you may have been taught...Native Americans didn't pressure you to follow their paths and did not make every tribal nation follow only one customs and beliefs...they let each tribe have their own beliefs, traditions and choose what paths they wanted to follow....they believed and helped your ancestors learn how to survive with open minds and hands...and look how well that turned out for them....so in saying those comments is only building on more of a dark path left by peoples ancestors ideal of what america is all about. I do agree that "FREE IS NOT FREE!!!" many races have lost in the many wars that to fight for what America does stand for...TO LIVE FREE THE WAY EACH OF US CHOOSE TO LIVE not forced to do so by others.....Thank you for your 25 years of service and the sacrifices you and your family have gone through.

I said I had a LAW degree, I didn't say I was a lawyer! How quick you are to judge. I'm not disrespecting the military - I just chose to take a different path in life - to each his own and I fully support our troops!

Now I'd like Virginian to tell us all EXACTLY how the vocabulary and verbage of somebody with a law degree (remember, NOT a lawyer) should sound...

Maybe I should throw out the "internet" vocabulary like he does - BTW, LMFAO, LOL, OMG, WTF!

Was Mr. Miller actually assulted or is he making this up as an excuse for work, to avoid a reprimand? Only he can say. IF he was assulted, the two perps need to be held accountable, regardless of race. I really don't think that they will be brought to justice in this matter, however. The vast lack of evidence surrounding this incident will undoubtably hinder the investigation.

As far as everyone claiming someone is being racist, go look at the prison system. Look at the numbers. These aren't victims of racial profiling or economic downfall, these are simple statistics. Every race is in there. Every race has it's shame. Fact is that the greater percentage is from minorities and that is because a greater percentage of the minority population commit crimes... and get caught.

While I fully agree closing our borders and mandating strict citizenship guidelines is necessary, we may never know if that would have prevented this incident with Mr. Miller since the perps got away. If I was a gambling man, based on my experience with legals and illegals, I would wager that they were here illegally, and it could have been prevented through not only the inception of stricter penalties, but enforcement of laws currently in place as well.

I think Desertdogs statement, "We are giving up our right to say our countries pledge of allegiance- our right to say merry christmas- our freedom of speech! So, you see, as long as we continue down that dark path, we will be fueling racism, not curtailing it." is completely true and obvious. I resent having to say Holiday party instead of Christmas and not being able to say the pledge of allegiance. Although, I believe every legal immigrant can pray to whomever or whatever they choose without persecution, what do you think our founding fathers would think of the path we're going down. I don't care if you pray to Allah, Budda, or your mailbox, but this is a nation was founded on Christian beliefs, and although you may not believe in God, you need to respect that our founding father's did and we need to honor that.
Purduekelli-- I doubt that race wouldn't enter your mind at all if you or your loved ones were viciously attacked, robbed, etc. Every time you saw a person of that race, you wouldn't think twice? Doubt it.

outoftowner - that's like saying things like gender, hair color, eye color, body build, etc. would make me think twice.

my grandmother lived through the holocaust and was nearly beaten and starved to death. i know she has not lived the past 90 years of life fearing every "dark-haired, pointy-nosed, little-toothbrush-moustache" looking male.

Her favorite quote that she told me years upon years: "Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom." so, the answer to your question - no, i wouldn't think twice!

desertdog... I agree with most of your post that was posted at 2:31. Yes we need to become Americans again. But let me tell you, just because I did not join the military and go over across seas to fight for some other countries freedom does not make me any less of a person or an American than you. Instead I have made a huge contribution on our society by raising two respectful, responsible, and well adjust kids. In these messed up times that is not always easy. I have also contributed alot in my community by volunteering and just being a good law abiding citizen. I bend over backwards to help any of my friends, family, neighbors and even sometimes strangers. So I do not appreciate you saying that any one that has not gone over seas to fight for someone elses freedoms is not worthy. I also think that the ones that join the military to truly just do good and to help their country doesn't put themselves on their own pedistal because of their own choices. That is great you were in the military and you fought for other countries' freedoms, but a real hero doesn't demand to be recognized for their acts and a real hero doesn't put themselves on their own pedistal. There are many that come back from war and don't expect anything from anyone because they just feel like they were doing there job, because they made the choice to have that job. That is a real hero. Just as the firefighters and cops in New York on 9/11 went into those burning buildings--they didn't do it to get recognition they did it to help and because they were simply doing their job. So you should not demand anything for doing your job, the job that you choose. You are no better than me or anyone else that isn't in the military or that doesn't believe in war. We all contribute to our society and others lives in our own way. Someone has to stay here to raise our children and defend our own country while you are over seas defending another country. Someone has to work in the factories, gas stations, construction, retail, offices, police and fire departments, courthouses and many many other things to keep our country from going under while you are across seas fighting for another country's freedom. So get off your high horse. Also I bet your hatered and loathing for an attorney will just disappear if you ever need one. And I know you are now saying I always follow the law so I will never be in that cituation. But keep in mind there is always car accidents, mistaken identities, and some sometimes just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. You hear all the time of innocent people being release from jail. So if you ever find yourself in that situation I hope that you atleast have enough intelligence to hire a lying, and terrible attorney (as you would put it). Good luck you are going to need it!

Desertdog - I'm glad you feel you know me so well that you can tell ME what I am thinking! Are you my significant other? Do you live with me? Do you eat with me? Are you my family? Are you my friend?

Virginian - Pigs have a better chance of flying then me ever explaining or justifying ANYTHING to YOU!?! Again, who are you to me?!?!

Janis - totally agree with everything you've said! well stated and very true!!!

Posted by purduekelli (anonymous) on September 12, 2008 at 10:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Virginian - for clarification purposes, and by no means justifying my existance to you, i practice Estate Law. I am not a prosecuting or defense attorney. I am not paid to convince a judge that somebody is innocent or guilty! I wasn't aware that my vocabulary and use of language had to be convincing to anybody on an open newspaper forum?

Posted by purduekelli (anonymous) on September 12, 2008 at 10:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No, you are wrong Virginian. If you graduate from law school, you have the right to call yourself a lawyer but that doesn't make you eligible to practice.

To practice law, you must pass the bar exam, thus making you an attorney (not lawyer).

I said I wasn't FROM here - my roots are not here. I didn't say I didn't currently live in the area! I read every local newspaper, not just this one. And I comment on nearly every one as well - only I never had to deal with somebody like you on the others!

I think that Albert Lea is a wonderful place to raise a family, a beautiful little city with much to offer.
The I-90 incident is unfortunate, when anyones right to be free and be safe is violated, this is unfortunate. The blame is not to be directed at a specific group of people but rather to the continuing growth of the general population As the population grows, so will crime. Sad but true. Law enforcement doesn't have all of the answers or adequate means to enforce all of the laws all of the time. They need to be commended rather than criticized.
I need to make a comment regarding someone who said in a post "rather than fighting for someone elses freedom", regarding wars........Ultimately, where ever our military prevails, it is to provide for and maintain the freedom of this great country of ours.

Just because you are a certain color, a certain gender, a service person etc. does not make you better than anyone else!!! People of all races, genders and professions have committed crimes, so don't even go there. You should not lump everyone in one package, should we hate all Germans because of the war, hate all Japanese because of the war, hate all Americans because of the Civil War? I think you need to step back and take a long look at yourself and how judgemental you are.
