Albert Lea boys’ track posts solid win

— There was plenty for Albert Lea boys’ track and field head coach Lisa Deyak to be happy about after Tuesday’s meet in New Richland.

The Tigers won eight events en route to first place finish at the NRHEG Invitational

“The night went very well,” Deyak said. “My guys could not have performed any better.”

Even missing 15 athletes Albert Lea prevailed and often times in events some of the athletes had never participated in before.

Junior Matt Tiegs and senior Ethan Marquardt were both triple winners for the Tigers. Tiegs swept the sprint events with wins in the 100-meters, 200 and 400 while Marquardt won the 1,600 race, 3,200 race and the pole vault.

The 4x400 relay and Trevor Ramussen in the 800 meters also came through with victories as Albert Lea racked up 144 points to win the meet by 13 points over Le Center-Cleveland.

Deyak said the 4x400 relay was very impressive because the Tigers fielded four runners that had little experience running the event. Kyle Kriewall, Kyle Larsen, Clayton Braaton and Rasmussen combined to turn in a time of 3 minutes, 47.8 seconds.

Albert Lea also had Torey Christensen finish second in the pole vault, Brody Sunblad place second in the 300 hurdles and Tyler Wichman take second in the high jump.

The Panthers finished tied for fifth in their home meet with 57 points behind four second-place finishes. Keith Billing finished second in the 100-meter dash and helped the 4x200 relay team of Alexander Nicolay, Brandon Espe and Tim Bartness place second as well. David Lindell took second in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 8 inches and Bartness recorded a second-place finish in the 400-meters.

Greg Ramaker brought home a trio of third-place finishes in the sprint events.
