Sheriff Harig issues burn ban

Dry conditions, strong winds prompt decision

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday initiated a countywide burning ban effective until further notice.

Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig said the ban is being put into place because of the dry conditions and strong winds. It includes even smaller recreational fires, he said.

On Tuesday a handful of controlled-burn fires got out of hand in Glenville, New Richland and Alden. The fire in Alden rekindled three times, Harig said.

The ban will be in place until the county receives a little moisture, the sheriff said.

“If we just get a little rain so things moisten up and start turning green, then we won’t have much danger,” he said.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Freeborn County, among other central and southern Minnesota cities, in the early morning hours Wednesday.

Today, there is a “red flag warning” from noon to 7 p.m., which is intended to warn firefighters about ideal conditions for wildfire ignition.

According to the National Weather Service, “little change in fire weather conditions is anticipated through Friday. A better chance of rain returns to much of the area over the weekend.”

About time, give the firefighters a break. I know in my area, they have been out every other day to put out grass fires.

I really hope people follow this - we could smell something burning outside today and we were very worried.

I hope people remember not to toss their cigarette out the car window!

ladybug that should apply burn ban or not, it's just one more reason the habit disgusts me.
