LAKE MILLS, Iowa A 36-year-old Lake Mills, Iowa, man was charged Tuesday in Winnebago County District Court with attempted murder after he allegedly beat his mother in the head with a hammer.
Bail for the man, Timothy Patrick Winter, has been set at $100,000, cash only. Attempted murder is a Class B felony,
He made an initial appearance in front of a magistrate judge in court Tuesday, still in custody, where he was informed of his charges. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. April 24.
According to Winnebago County District Court records, the events leading to his arrest started after the Lake Mills Police Department received a 911 call from Cindy Winter, Timothy Winter’s mother, at 11:22 p.m. last Thursday at 311 N. Grant St. in Lake Mills.
After receiving the call, an officer entered the house and met Cindy Winter in the kitchen, court documents state.
“Cindy had a large purple bruise on the left side of her face by her eye,” records indicated. “Cindy was bleeding profusely from the head.”
The officer stated when the woman turned around, he witnessed “a severe wound on the back of her head with muscle and skull exposed,” according to documents.
She told the officer that Timothy Winter had struck her several times with an unknown object, documents state.
While investigating at the scene, officers found a hammer covered with blood, hair and skin. The officer stated in the criminal complaint against Timothy Winter that he thinks the hammer was used to commit the assault.
Timothy Winter fled the area and was arrested Friday morning in Minnesota about three hours away from Winnebago County after someone made a suspicious person complaint. He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail.

It makes me sick even reading the story. I couldn't even hit an animal with a hammer.

Not all parents deserve the "parent of the year" award... there are a lot of worthless parents out there. Wether this woman fits that or not, I can not say. Would you feel the same if the mommy beat the kid with a chain for complaining while daddy was shoving unholy things up his rear? And several years later he snaps over the comments she continues to make toward him over the whole ordeal? Probably not.

feel pity for the criminal is the wrong thing to do look at his age he deserves what he gets. The truth is crime is crime and an eye for an eye. If abused then speak up don't vent out and try to kill someone. That is why we have laws otherwise it would be the old west and you just shoot them where they stand.

I realize we live in a country were freedom of speech is one of our great privileges, but as a relative of both of these people, I am appalled at the comments being made here. We already have enough to deal with, without having to answer phone calls and reply to questions that are based on misinformation being printed in the paper and announced on the television. And now we also have to deal with the ridecule and condemnation of people who know absolutly NOTHING about the circumstances. Speculation and uninformed comments only make things worse.

Nenswa, I think most readers "feel" the pain of the mom in this case. We fail to grasp how this could happen. Do you have any information you can share that can help us understand?
