The Albert Lea Wa-tan-ye Service Club hosted the spring meeting of District III and IV clubs of the Association of Wa-tan-ye Clubs Inc. on April 4 at the Ramada Inn. There were 37 members registered representing clubs in Garner, Mason City, Cresco and Riceville, Iowa, as well as Albert Lea.
Association officers present included President Julie Rameriz, Clinton, Iowa; President-elect Theresa Sell, Manson, Iowa; historian Jeanette Petersen, Clinton, Iowa; and Parliamentarian Janeil Olson of Garner, Iowa. Greetings were brought by Vickie Girard of Sac City, Iowa, director of District II. Arlene Van Horn, District IV director of Mason City and Sheryl Noble, District III director of Riceville addressed the group.
Dorothy Wedge, president of the host club, welcomed the gathering and announced the program, “Aprons and Stoves,” a sesquicentennial play written by Jan Jerdee of Albert Lea. Because so many of the Wa-tan-ye clubs are in Iowa a special Iowa version had been written by Jerdee to present at the spring meeting. Jerdee was assisted by Alyce Jacobsen, Carol Wolters and Shirley Chryst.
Association President Julie Rameriz distributed information on the convention which will be held Oct. 9, 10, and 11 at the Wild Rose Casino & Resort at Clinton, Iowa.
The regular monthly meeting of the Albert Lea Club was held April 6 at the Ramada Inn with Dorothy Wedge presiding. Christa Stieler, director of the Humane Society of Freeborn County, was introduced by Delores Weller, program chairman. Stieler told of the needs of the Humane Society and the current fundraising events planned for a June start on a new shelter. The club voted to support the shelter project with a $1,000 donation.
Marie Querna reported on the association library fund request for the Freeborn County Historical Museum library. Cash donations for the Salvation Army food shelf were collected and would be taken to the Citadel by Beverly Head. The next meeting will be held May 4 at the Ramada Inn.
