Church bell reported stolen
Published Monday, February 2, 2009
Albert Lea police are investigating the theft of an old church bell from the Freeborn County Historical Village sometime Thursday night. The theft was reported to police on Friday morning.
Entry to the fenced off village area was made by cutting the chain lock on the gate located near the fairgrounds arch on North Bridge Avenue. The 400-pound cast iron bell was on a wood frame in front of the Big Oak School building.
This bell was reportedly from the old Lunder Lutheran Church near Twin Lakes and donated to the historical society many years ago.
The heavy bell was dragged through the snow and along a shoveled sidewalk past the gate and taken out of the fairgrounds area.
Evidence at the scene checked by police included shoe or boot prints in the snow.
