Abortion legislation will affect hospitals

Published Tuesday, February 17, 2009

President Obama promised Planned Parenthood (July 9, 2007) that “the first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.” He hasn’t done it yet, but it will happen soon. This would eliminate every restriction on abortions nationwide.

How does that affect the average citizen?

Thirty percent of U.S. health care facilities are operated by the Catholic Church. After FOCA is signed into law by the president, liberal lawyers will force faith-based hospitals to perform abortions. Some Catholic hospitals have already stated they will shut down rather than kill an unborn child (MCCL Newsletter February 2009). The bishops won’t close health care facilities until liberal lawyers force the issue. That way, Barack Obama will be appropriately blamed for hospital closings. Do you have a faith-based hospital in your town?

How is it Freedom of Choice if it doesn't also apply to the hospital? Or does freedom only apply to the patient?

Forcing hospitals to perform abortions, although immoral, is not really the biggest danger of the act. It will be another encroachment on our freedoms by watering down the principle of Federalism established by the states when they established the federal government. Yes, the states established the federal government, not vice versa. They reminded the federal government of that in the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

According to the Tenth Amendment, the Supreme Court decision on Roe v Wade was unconstitutional. This decision took away the right of the states to determine their own laws determining whether abortion is legal or not, as the states have the right to determine laws pertaining to murder, robbery, traffic laws, etc.

To return us to the intended purpose of Federalism would be to overturn Roe v Wade and return laws regarding abortion back to the states. This is the real issue, not whether abortion is legal or not. According to recent polls, state by state, we can eventually abolish abortion-on-demand.

Very well said rickkc and let's hope it happens but you can't have the 10th Amendment and socialised medicane. Time to take back our government.

Eliminate every restriction. Really? Me thinks there is an exageration around here somewhere. More far (far, far, far) right rhetoric. Bring yourself towards the middle where reality resides.

I'm terrible with US History and all, but ironically that is how I've always felt. It should be left to the states to decide. Not the federal government.

NoDFL, I agree but how do you purpose we do that?

Done some looking around and found this about the above topic:

FOCA will do away with state laws on parental involvement, on partial birth abortion, and on all other protections. Meaning, your 15 year old daughter could not get her ears pierced without your consent, but she could have an abortion without you ever knowing.

FOCA will compel taxpayer funding of abortions.

FOCA will force faith-based hospitals and healthcare facilities to perform abortions.

FOCA isn't what it sounds like. Obama wants to open up abortion with no restrictions almost as a means of population control. He is quoted as saying he would never want his daughter "punished" if she made a "mistake".

If Me2 has the courage to see where "reality really resides", go to: www.priestsforlife.org/resources/photosa...

To clarify... refering to the reality of the debate, not the reality of abortion itself. Neither side does itself any good with statements that are overblown.

the reality of what abortion really is should be brought into the debate.

too many act as if it is just some kind of procedure.

it is killing a human life.

"Catholic News Service asserted that in its interpretation of the legislation, FOCA neither poses any such risk to Catholic hospitals, nor would require religious hospitals to participate in abortion".

So one would assume Catholic Hospitals could still refuse abortions???
