Cancer telethon events kick off this weekend

Eagles Cancer Telethon events kick off locally this weekend.
The Geneva Cancer Auction at the Geneva Liquor Store will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
At the Albert Lea Eagles Club on Saturday, an aluminum can collection will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. behind the club. There will be hot beef sandwiches served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $6 per person. Lefty and the Old Timers will provide live entertainment from 2 to 4 p.m. A stuffed pork chop benefit supper will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for $7 per person.
In addition, there will be a pool tournament with registration at 10 a.m. and the tournament starting at 11 a.m.; a cribbage tournament with a 10 a.m. start; a silent auction starting at 11 a.m.; and a live auction starting at 7 p.m.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Jan. 9
• The Freeborn County Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the National Guard Armory from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To make an appointment to donate, call 373-4544.
• The new Washington Avenue Apartments, 608 S. Washington Ave., will hold an open house from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will be staff on hand to give tours and help seniors fill out an application. There will also be food and refreshments. The apartments are low-income housing for seniors age 62 and older. There are still apartments available to be rented.
• Prairie Fire Theatre and Sibley Elementary students will present “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. at the Southwest Middle School Little Theatre. Admission is $2 for students and $4 for adults.
Saturday, Jan. 10
• The Washington Avenue Apartments will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 11
• The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will host an amaranth pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee will be served. Members of the Albert Lea High School choir will be serving. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund. Those attending are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food shelf.
