Jennifer Lombardi earns law degree; Nathaniel Lombardi earns bachelor’s
Jennifer M. Lombardi, a 2002 graduate of Albert Lea High School and 2006 graduate of University of St. Thomas with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and visual communications, received her juris doctor degree cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul on May 17.
Nathaniel J. Lombardi, a 2005 graduate of Albert Lea High School, received his bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude in psychology and English from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul on May 23.
They grew up in Albert Lea, educated by Albert Lea Public Schools, Northland Karate, Ascension Lutheran Church and Albert Lea Youth Soccer Association.
They are the children of Drs. Bev and Joe Lombardi, residents of Albert Lea for the last 20 years.
Gustavus announces 2009-10 incoming class
Local students are among the 620 full-time first-year students who have accepted an offer of admission to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter for the 2009-10 academic year.
The incoming students are recipients of one of the following merit-based scholarships:
President’s scholarships range from $15,000 to $17,000 annually and represent the college’s commitment to academic excellence. Through an application and interview process, recipients are chosen based on their previous accomplishments and potential for future success.
Dean’s scholarships range from $4,000 to $14,000 annually and recognize students who show academic achievement, service, and/or leadership.
These local students, listed here with their scholarships, have accepted the offer of admission.
From Albert Lea: Jenna Christensen, presidential scholarship; Leigha Sherburne, dean’s scholarship.
From Alden: Megan Miller, dean’s scholarship.
From Ellendale: Gregory Ramaker, dean’s scholarship.

Andrew Ball, Trent Miller graduate from St. John’s
Two local students participated in the commencement ceremony at St. John’s University in Collegeville May 10.
Andrew S. Ball, son of Steve Ball of Albert Lea, and Edith Brink of Grand Rapids, participated in the commencement ceremony at SJU. Ball received a bachelor of arts degree in history.
Trent Rolland Miller, son of Craig and Kathleen Miller of Albert Lea, participated in the commencement ceremony at SJU. Miller received a bachelor of arts degree in biology.
Kathleen Kjos, Kristina Nesse graduate from St. Benedict
Two local students participated in the commencement ceremony at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph on May 9.
Kathleen Kjos, daughter of Chuck and Julie Kjos of Albert Lea, participated in the commencement ceremony at CSB. Kjos received a bachelor of arts in communication.
Kristina Nesse, daughter of Chuck and Judy Nesse of Albert Lea, participated in the commencement ceremony at CSB. Nesse received a bachelor of arts in economics and political science, with the honor of magna cum laude. Magna cum laude indicates a grade point average of 3.75-3.89.
Elizabeth Volkman graduates from St. Olaf
Elizabeth Volkman of Albert Lea participated in St. Olaf College’s 120th commencement ceremony May 24.
Volkman was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and Spanish, cum laude. She is the daughter of Neil and Mary Jo Volkman of Albert Lea and a graduate of Albert Lea High School.
Brady Hanson honored at St. Olaf College
Brady Hanson from Albert Lea was recognized for academic achievement at St. Olaf College’s annual Honors Day convocation on May 1. Honors Day recognizes all full-time seniors and special students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher, and all full-time juniors, sophomores and first-year students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The convocation also recognizes students who have been awarded scholarships and fellowships, including Rhodes scholars, Fulbright scholars and senior members of leadership and academic honor societies.
Hanson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hanson of Albert Lea.
Joseph Hubly named C.E. Myers Scholarship winner
Joseph Hubly, a 2009 graduate of Albert Lea High School, is the recipient of the $1,000 C.E. “Charlie” Myers Economic Development Grant.
Hubly has been accepted at University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, where he plans to major in human resources. He is the son of Leo and Mary Hubly of Clarks Grove.
The C.E. “Charlie” Myers Economic Development Grant Fund was established by the many friends of Charlie Myers and Jobs Incorporated in recognition of his leadership and service in establishing Jobs In. and paving the way for future economic development efforts in Albert Lea.
Area students graduate from RCTC
Rochester Community and Technical College announced its spring semester 2009 graduates.
Students are listed with their degree and program.
From Albert Lea: Charlene Marie Everhart, associate of science degree in nursing; Stephanie M. Gordon, associate of arts degree in liberal arts and sciences; Kelley Naumann, associate of applied science in surgical technology; Jeffrey Okland, certicated in computer-aided drafting 3D-design technician and computer-aided drafting 3D-modeling technician; John Ruud, associate of applied science degree, health information technology; Lonna Vanderploeg, associate of applied science degree, floriculture/garden center technology.
From Hayward: Bradley Thompson, associate of applied science, landscape, golf course and grounds maintenance.
Krystina Cameron named to dean’s list
Krystina Cameron of Clarks Grove was named to the dean’s list at the University of Sioux Falls for the 2009 spring semester. To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
She is the daughter of James Cameron and Kathleen Cameron and a junior majoring in elementary education.
Albert Lea students receive degrees from NDSU
Benjamin M. Woodside and Taylor Ted Zimmerman, both of Albert Lea, graduated from North Dakota State University in Fargo following spring semester 2009.
Woodside received a bachelor of science degree in management.
Zimmerman received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.
Caleb DeVries on dean’s list
Caleb DeVries, son of Jan DeVries of Hollandale and Kim DeVries of Faribault, was named to the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management’s spring semester 2009 dean’s list.
To be included a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.66 or better.
DeVries, a 2007 graduate of Albert Lea High School, is a junior majoring in finance.
Devin Kaasa on dean’s list
Devin Kaasa, son of Timothy and Dawn Kaasa of Glenville, was named to the spring 2008-09 dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Kaasa is a 2005 graduate of Glenville-Emmons High School.
To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Devan Miller on dean’s list
Devan Miller, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori Miller of New Richland, was named to the spring 2008-09 dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Miller is a 2008 graduate of Albert Lea High School.
To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Michael Greibrok on dean’s list
Michael Greibrok, son of Dwight and Patricia Greibrok of Glenville, was named to the spring 2008-09 dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Greibrok is a 2006 graduate of Glenville-Emmons High School.
To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Laura Gaudian, Abigail Randall awarded scholarships
Laura Gaudian and Abigail Randall have been awarded $500 scholarships from Church Women United.
Gaudian is the daughter of Bryce and Cindy Gaudian and a 2009 graduate of Albert Lea High School. She plans to attend Bethany Lutheran College and major in communications.
In high school, Gaudian was active in choir, volleyball and softball. She was also a 4-H member and ambassador, volunteered at nursing homes and participated in music at her church. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Randall is the daughter of Timothy and Melody Randall. She is a 2009 graduate of Albert Lea High School. She plans to attend Oral Roberts University and major in nursing.
Randall was home school and then attended Hollandale Christian School through eighth grade. At Albert Lea High School, she was active in track and cross country. She went on a mission trip to Colombia, has been active in her church, 4-H, and was selected to Girls’ State in her junior year.
Church Women United is made up of women from various churches who meet four times a year with a Christian theme for each session.
A salad luncheon is held each year in May and personal donations are also given to fund these scholarships.
