Chamber director: Fireworks still a go

Published Saturday, July 4, 2009

Despite the rain that passed through the Albert Lea area on Independence Day, it seems it isn't enough to halt the fireworks display slated for dusk at City Beach — so far.

Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Randy Kehr said as of now the display is still on. The rain hit Albert Lea around 6 p.m.

"We looked on the radar and there's not much after this isolated cell," he said.

He said he can remember only one time when the question of whether to shoot the fireworks was iffy. He said that time it was a low cloud ceiling yet without rain. The fireworks display went ahead as planned.

He said the fireworks shooters can go ahead with the display as long as it isn't raining at the time of the display. The display for Albert Lea is slated to start at 10 p.m. tonight.

Kehr said the final call is made within the hour.

I gotta say the plane parade was pretty cool as well! This was the first year that we have noticed it happening, and it was just as much fun to watch the planes go by the display as it was to watch the display! Way to go Albert Lea, and thank you to those who make it happen year after year!

The sad thing to see is all the garbage in Fountain Lake Park. Why can't some people (or apparently a LOT of people) clean up after themselves?
