USC splits with Minn. Lake

Published Friday, July 10, 2009

The United South Central American Legion team split a doubleheader with Minnesota Lake Thursday in Minnesota Lake.

USC was able to ride the strong pitching of Nick Fure in a 6-2 win in the first game as Fure allowed two hits and struck out four in the win.

In the second game a costly error led to two unearned runs in a 3-1 loss as USC dropped the second game.

Fure and Ned Kalis went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the first game and USC took an early 2-0 lead.

Minnesota Lake got as close as 2-1 after the third, but a Kevin George RBI double and a William Huper RBI ground out led to a three-run inning for USC as it pushed its lead to 5-1.

Minnesota Lake retaliated in the second game for three runs in the first in a five-inning game that was called due to lightning.

An error in the outfield allowed Minnesota Lake to score two runs and it held on for a 3-1 win.
