50 years ago — 1959

Austin High School defeated Albert Lea 471 to 478 in the Big Nine Conference golf meet. Clair Friday and Jack Lehmann tied for third place with a score of 116. Other scores for the Tigers were Pete Jacobs 122, Dave Donovan 124 and Roger Petersen 128.

Norm Emerson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Alden to a 14-13 victory over Bricelyn in a V-8 League amateur baseball game.

Calvary Baptist defeated Myrtle Lutheran 11-7 in a Church Softball League game. Hitting home runs for Calvary Baptist were Fred Jones, 2, Jay Larson and Stan Larson.

25 years ago — 1984

Named to the Border League All-Conference Baseball Team were: Jay Jensen, Tom Nichols, Tim Nichols and Steve Sanderson from Alden; Roger Thompson, Mike Gormley and Chad Goerish from Kiester-Walters; Dave Dahl, Chad Schmidt and Dennis Ahearn from Emmons; Brian Murry, Carlyn Cole and Rich Berkeland from Delavan; Tom Haught from Winnebago; Richie Williamson from Lyle; Robert Hansen from Freeborn; Jim Plumhuff and Todd Plumhuff from Welcome; and Mike Geerdes from Trimont.

Named to the Border League All-Conference softball team were: Penny Decker, Kelly Jahnke, Marilyn Olson, Anita Skov and Barb Wedin from Alden-Conger; Kayla Ritter, Julie Krumweide and Kim Ritter from Trimont; Miriam Franta, Donna Kortuem, Teresa Kortuem and Sheila Toupal from Winnebago; Deena Cole and Kayla Grupe from Delavan; Tammy Ziemer from Ceylon; Teri Swank from Lyle; Sheila Roeker and Patti Tractow from Welcome; Terri Lamping and Chris Schewe from Emmons.

10 years ago — 1999

Placing at the Minnesota state girls’ track and field from ALHS were: Kari Beese fifth in the discus, Melissa Roche seventh in the 1600-meter run and Kara Haroldson 14th in the pole vault.

Chad Knudson of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva shot a 154 to place seventh in Class “A” at the Minnesota State Golf Tournament.

Hanson Tire Service won the title in the Shoppers Special Bowling League. Team members included Betty Callahan, Vange Landaas, LaDonna Nelson and Virginia Stenseth.
